I used Chemtool and Scotchbrite to clean the port surfaces. It would have been easier if I had removed the studs but I was paranoid about breaking one (or more).

I've always used SCE gaskets. You can even have the gaskets made any thickness, and to the exact size of your exhaust ports.

You're not paranoid - those suckers round off just looking at them. The only way I would touch one is with a six-point socket. Even the best 12-point will round them off.

The other safe way is to lock two nuts together on the stud and then wind out the inside one.
