Hey it occurred to me to ask, how do you like the aluminum driveshaft? Is it the ford performance one piece one? There’s a lot of slop/chunk in the drivetrain that’s almost certainly the stock two piece driveshaft. I’m thinking of changing it out but curious about your experience. Any vibration issues? Was it worth it?
I've been running a Driveshaft Shop 3.5" aluminium driveshaft for the past 11 years and it's been great. Not cheap but definitely worth it, and the 19lb weight saving is also pretty useful. I could cruise at 100mph all day if it was legal.

I have the FR DS ..made by DANA Spicer. The DS is way better than the OEM 2 part DS. But if I would have know before the purchase what I know nowadays, I would have bought the Driveline DS because of the CV used at the diff-side of the DS. So no need to worry about the pinion angle .

But if your ride is stock hight...the FR DS is a good offer... good quality / price.

Ying and Yang, with only one u-joint the velocity changes are not compensated, so you get vibrations somewhere. But, the OEM driveshaft is bad, really bad ..... why they didn't used a standard support rubber bushing will stay a secret I think.

BTW, the clunk is the play in the differential.

@GriffX. if the Backlash is up to 12/1000 inch. all good .. within spec. ( in my case -I have 12 /1000 backlash )
But the diff itself might have some play.. a .s..o. Result ..a little "clunky " Solution : Differential Ring Pinion..bearings , all the way new. Biggest question - is it worth the money.. ?

Depends on the rest of the car... mileage... overall condition..

Interesting, the car only has about 38k miles so I would not guess that the diff has a lot of wear. Going to change diff and trans fluid as I suspect they’re original.

I though for sure that driveshaft was clunking because you can hear it and I’d doesn’t sound like a clunk from inside a diff, more audible metallic under the car clunk

you must add up all clearances from the ring gear, throughout the spider gears to the wheel. If I remember correctly you can move the driveshaft 10 degrees before the wheels start to spin when you go from left to right turning of it.

There is no noticeable play in the driveshaft u-joint or the two CVs.

@ GriffX. that´s why I wrote about the renewal of all items /parts inside the rear axle housing

Do it once..do it right... When I renewed the bearings in my rearend.. I was stupid, because while working there..I should have bought the stuff.. Differential and Ring /Pinion...

But. the budget ... the budget is limited.

You have clearance pinon/ring gear + one pair spider gear + 2nd pair spider gear. Maybe with a new differential the empty way from driveshaft rotation to wheel spin is smaller. On my other cars it is in general the same, but they have 2 rubber disk to dampen the noise. Ford should have used one at the gearbox and two CVs. But, maybe there are some reasons not to do it like that.

...simple reason. MONEY .. a guibo / hardy disc / rubber disc is more expensive than a simple u-joint
