Corsa Owners Help Needed!

I had a Pypes O/R X with M-80s and the corsa sports, and it was raspy and trumpeted around 3300RPM really bad.

I switched back to my O/R H and it's much better IMO.

Pypes O/R H-pipe with Corsa Sports (no resonators or anything else):


Same set up, with hot rod cams:



I suggest going with an H pipe. If you think the H pipe is raspy as well, then I would go for cats instead of resonators.

Damn. Was it the trumpeting or raspiness that did it in for you when you had the o/r x, m80s, and Corsa Sports?

HellsBells, I love your setup. Your HR cams setup alone is what sealed the deal for me on those cams. Can't wait to get them installed next week.

Honestly, I had the O/R H and corsa sports before that but I wanted to try out the X. I threw on M-80s because people said the X was raspy. It was a combination of a few things but the trumpeting was really annoying to me. That, and the fact that the M-80s made the exhaust way too quiet for me.

Like GallopingFord said, there's something about the Corsas--I'm sure it has to do with their patented tech and their research but they are the only muffler i've ever run on any car where you have incredible "volume control" so to speak. The difference between idle, cruising, and WOT, in terms of how loud the exhaust is, is very large.

They are a lot of fun for sure! If you're running an O/R pipe with the corsas, be aware that the cams are WAY loud at idle with that set up--in case you ever take the cats off. Let me know if you need any tips or info on the install, s197gt07 and I went through it a few months back and it makes a lot more sense once you take the valve covers off.

Also, the hot rods may introduce a bit of drone in your setup. This is because the motor harmonics are altered with the new cams so just beware of that (corsa mufflers are engineered based on stock motors).

That could work. I'll tell you right now that this set up will trumpet between 3000-3500RPM:

Stock Headers, Pypes O/R X, M-80s mounted on the over-the-axle pipes, corsa sports.

It wouldn't be so annoying if it kept trumpeting to redline. It doesn't trumpet if you really baby the throttle but if you go anything more than say, 25% throttle, it will trumpet. It will start out of nowhere and be really loud and obnoxious about 3000-3200RPM, and then by 3500-3600RPM, it will stop and your exhaust will go back to "normal".

You could try a different resonator. The size of the resonator will determine what frequency it will trumpet at. Mounting location also affects this, as does tailpipe length.

I have the extremes on my 5.0 with cats. It has some rasp but not much. Im about to switch to a catted x so rasp might go up but i dont care. I like the cruising sound and WOT sound. Better than that i like being able to hold a conversation in the car.

I read somewhere that the farther back you put the resonators the quieter it will be. Is this true?

There are also different types of resonators. Made of different materials and some actually have a flow pattern to help get rid of rasp and drone.

That makes sense. I'm more worried about "cleaning up" the sound than actually quieting it.

Honestly, a sure bet is to go with cats or small resonators. Small resonators will tend to tone down the raspy noise but not do much in terms of making it quiet. If you are dead set on staying with an O/R pipe, i would try something with a short body but fat body.

These are what I usually use on other cars but I don't think they fit all that well on the S197. You may be able to fit them on the cross-over pipe instead of the over-the-axle pipe:

The Vibrant ultra quiet that I linked above is "designed" to reduce rasp.

The pattern jewc is referring to are called "louvered" resonators. They are typically found on cherrybombs and other glass packs (for example, summitracing and jeg's have a house-brand series of glass packs with louvers).

The louvers are meant to reduce noise in general, not necessarily rasp. It's a different way of reducing noise, it creates turbulence in the pipe so that the sound waves will bounce and cancel each other out. Other resonators use perforated cores, which allow the sound waves to travel from the exhaust stream into the canister, where they are absorbed (usually by fiber glass, steel mesh, or some other material). Louvered mufflers reduce flow by about 2-5% depending on the size, when compared to their non-louvered counterparts).

To reduce rasp, you're best off with a chambered muffler to begin with, and if that's not possible, then I would go for a large body perforated core, just like the Vibrant ultra quiets. The "bottle" style resonators, which are much thinner, don't work as well for rasp.

I really appreciate this help. I may have to try out those Vibrant resonators if the m80s don't work. Is that over $100 a piece?

Yes, they're really expensive unfortunately but they are built to last. I would seriously check measurements before you buy them and also note that your exhaust will be a lot quieter with those on.

Give the M-80s a go if you'd like. JPC also makes some cool resonators and there are a TON available from summitracing and jegs. Exhaust shops will also carry glasspacks if you don't want to order anything online.

Thanks guys. At least I have some a couple more options I can try before I have to resort to cats.
