Critical Update

a critical update without a changelog or release notes usually tells me there's more in it for the manufacturer (SCT) than an actual bug fix that's critical to end-users..

perhaps they found a bug that allows people to unlock the X3, or tune multiple cars with it, and wanted to get it sorted (like iPhone firmware updates and how they used to block jailbreaks?)

After having two different events with my SF3 tuner where the tune didn't upload properly, but the tuner said it did, this makes me wonder. Both times, the upload went just like it always has. But when I went down the street, I'd only get about 1/4 mile from the house and soon as I got on it, it would sputter very badly, backfire and then the car died. Luckily, I keep the tuner in my car after every upload just in case. Both times, I had to load the stock tune, then reload the tune I wanted on there. And in the Florida heat and humidity, that SUCKS.

So I wonder if this update will address this issue. Regardless, even without a change log, I'm going to do it. Because if there was something funky going on with the uploading of a tune that was causing damage to people's engines, SCT wouldn't put that out there because it would be an admission of culpability and they could end up paying for a lot of engines.

Just as a reminder, make sure you flash your car back to the stock tune before you update!

THIS............ not to mention I've been reading a TON of threads where the tuner was locking up during a flash. A friend of mine had to send SCT his PCM and his tuner to get his sorted. At least they gave him a rental though.

Yes, always return it to stock before flashing.


And Tom, I've always made it a practice to keep my X3 in my glove box 24/7.

So if your gonna change your fan settings you should put it back to stock. Then flash it with the custom tune. I have never put it back to stock before I put my HR cam tune that I got from Ken B.

I've never put it back stock either. Never had an issue.. I've heard this debate several times and never really seen a clear answer. Some say it's okay to just flash and load, others say go stock the load.



Either way, I'll update it before I do my next tune.

i dont really give a shit cuz my tuner and i have a copy of my stock tune so they can jumble it , lose it, doesnt matter. any reputable tuner can redo a stock tune in the event of a lost tune, locked car etc,,, besides my car wont run on a stock tune

Yep - I'm not updating unless my tuner says its a good move (or SCT releases a chang elog)

There is also a post on their Facebook page. Many questions and vague answers. I just spent a couple hours updating mine a couple weeks ago.

I have a part number #3000 the one where it comes with preloaded tunes and can hold 3 custom tunes.
bet they want to take away a feature.

you do NOT need to return your car to stock before uploading a new tune to the device or reloading a new tune to the car.

however you MUST return the car to stock BEFORE you update the FIRMWARE on the SCT Device (this isn't to be confused with uploading a custom tune to the device)

so in order to apply this critical update, you have to return the car to stock first, update the firmware on the device, then load your tune back to the car

Ok I got ya, I was confused. I did the update but didnt return my car to the stock tune first. I'm guessing maybe it didnt do the update then ? It did say it completed the update when I was sitting there waiting. Who knows, I'm just glad my car runs good. LOL
