I just pulled a trutrac out of mine with a rotating clunk when coasting down.
I have been chasing this nose for a few months!
Needless to say I am pissed, after pulling the D-shaft 20 times
changing gears 3 times!
Can you give me a clue as to what the noise sounds like?

what did you have done and when. all at the same time or separate times. any suspension work UCA's LCA's etc. when did the problem start and describe it. i've been through a bunch of crap with mine as have others here so i'm sure if we have a timeline and description we can help a little.

true trac and gears at the same time. went from 410s to 373s and moser axles at the same time. done by another shop. got a package deal...mistake one.

Anyway had the clutch changed recently and that didnt have any effect on noise. Noise is like clanking usually when releasing/engaging the clutch. Thats why I thought maybe clutch related, but a new clutch solved nothing.

Thats when I thought maybe gears?

Is the sound only when moving? If so it could be a bad gear install. You could check and see if there is any movement in the pinion

Do you only get the noise when using the clutch or gettin on or off the gas?
Do you hear it when coasting down?

Knowing the shop that did the install, I would double check all their work. They were rough on my car, one of the reasons I will never go back!

Yeah I would pull the cover and check everything, being you have a true trac it wont cost much to put new gear lube in (hope they didnt put syn oil in it) check all the bolts on the diff (truetrac's are known for the bolts loosing up) and gears and look at the wear. Did you check to see if there was any excess play in the pinion?

mine makes a ton of noise, had the shop check it twice, the owner said yes its noisier then most, but nothing sounded like trouble. Also once you change the stock suspension and DS the harmonics get amplified.

If you are using the stock drive shaft I would check the support bolts that hold the d/s up behind the trans just to make sure they are not loose.

using the clutch, and when getting off gas a good clunk

this is most likely the biggest contributing factor, edit: just to be clear...we are talking about tillman

ive had the stock suspension changed almost 5 years ago. never had this noise until now

Bad gear install...I really doubt that even sittin here!
The clunk you are describing to be a bad install would mean WAY to much back/lash.
If the pinion pre-load was off much at all you would also have a horrible wine or howl
so to get the pinion to clunk it would really have to be phucked!
Grab the D-shaft and check the amount of play there is in the diff, it could very well
feel as though there is 100,000 of back/lash on the ring gear, most likely this is not the case,
all the play will be in the Trutrac!!
Other than a bad upper control arm or U-joint that Trutrac is most likely the problem!
You should also be running standard 75/140 gear oil.
Lets us know what you find.

I'll check the play in the ds as you mentioned.

Using Ford gear oil

I use to have a tru trac in a 01 bullitt. It made a horrible loud pitch grinding sound when I shifted hard. It performed great but just made a lot of noise.

this might not be it but if it clunks when you take off and shift it could be a lca bushing, been there.look all around the bushing and you can see if it's torn and hanging out.process of elimanation.

There is a howl on decel. Thought i mentioned that, sorry.

I really dont think its truetrac but cant confirm nor deny at this point. You use RP gear oil?

I really dont think its the true trac (or JUST the true trac) but i could be wrong

they're fine, the noise is not when taking off. only occurs when engaging/disengaging clutch. actually most noticeable at low speeds
