I am trying to get my block torn down to take to the machine shop to inspect and see if the scratch in my cylinder will bore out. Anyway, all the bolts for the main caps are off, but the main caps aren't simply coming off. I have knocked them a bit with a 2x4 but not too hard for fear of messing something up. How do you properly remove the main caps after the bolts are out without jacking up the caps or the crank?

Thanks.

Make sure you remove the side bolts as well. Once that's done, you should be able to grab them by hand and rock them a little to get them to wiggle out. I'll generally slide two of the bigger main bolts down into them a little to gain some leverage. Sometimes a tap on the crank with a rubber mallet, or dead blow will jar them loose. Rocking them side to side has usually worked for me though.

Dead blow FTW.

Did you remove the side bolts, too?

That was what I was going to ask...

I'll know more about what direction I will take with the pistons after I get the block checked...but they are a good deal :)

OK. Just let me know. The studs are brand new and a good deal, too. You'll want the studs to do your machine work on your block and hang on to your side bolts for the machine work. You'll need new side bolts for assembly but you can use the existing ones for machining.
