Electric water pump relay wiring?

I didn't buy the relay kit for the electric water pump because I read a couple place that you could just buy it at the hardware store and I didn't have time the motor is going in sat and I just got the pump today and forgot order the relay....so can any tell me step by step how to wire it up, and which relay to buy and anything else? I have never wired a relay before.

Go to an auto parts store and get yourself a 20a fuel pump relay. Doesn't matter what kind, or for what kind of car. Just any old 4 pole (a 5 pole will work) 20a relay.

Pole 85 will go to ground.
Pole 86 will go to the fused power lead on the water pump
Pole 87 will go to some sort of 12v switched power source that will act as the trigger source for the relay
Pole 30 to power. I wired mine to the battery supply pole for the relay box under the hood.

Awesome thank you. What did you use for the switched 12v (pole 87)? one more question sorry...My pump just came with two wires going into a contector. I do I have to buy a fused power lead or is that a part of the harness that is already in the car?

I wired mine to the noise suppressor on the passengers side head. That is actually a 12v switched wire that they take to ground to kill engine noise in the electrical system.

We should sticky the GI Joe wiring questions....lol. Dave just did a bunch of wiring stuff and I made him wiring diagrams to help him out. I'll check to see if I still have one to attach for you.

Hey, i'm not the brightest bulb on certain stuff like suspension setup, but if I half ass know something, I try to help out. Luckily those electrical classes get some use on here..haha.

Since no one else mentioned this, I will. Be sure to mount the relay. The relays don't like vibration and have been known to fail. Do yourself a favor and purchase 2 relays as they are inexpensive - throw one in the glove box!!

Nice write-up, thank you. Two quick questions. One, what size fuse do they recommend or supply? What gauge wire is provided in the kit?

looks like 12 gauge for the power/ground. i think it was a 30 amp,but not 100% on that,i would have to go check it out.

Hey guys,
If you use the aftermarket Bosch type relay, which is the most common, Be sure to wire The 12v relay turn on wire to 86 or 85 NOT to 87 or 87a (5 pin relay) otherwise you will be pulling your main power through the turn on wire and fuse, potentially damaging the circuit or fuse. You can supply power and ground to terminal 85 and 86 in any order. Main fused power goes to pin 30 and the component you want turned on goes to 87 if you want it normally on or to 87a if you want it turned off when the relay goes on.Hope this helps people understand the function of these relays.
