With the upper and lower control arms, the axle doesn't change angle as it moves up and down. Therefore it doesn't matter if the axle is supported or hanging when you check/fill the differential. As long as the car isn't at a crazy angle you'll be fine.

Whaaaat?

I'm saying if the axle is hanging down, there is more room to fill the differential, since the axle isn't jammed all the way up into the wheel wells.

Vince, I thought he was asking if the fill reading would change based on if the axle was up or down. The axle doesn't tilt forward and back when it goes up and down so your full mark with the suspension extended will still be full when the suspension is fully compressed. But you're right, access is easier with the axle hanging.

Well, I got the cover installed. It took me longer than planned but pretty much everything does these days. I did have to remove the panhard bar to install the new cover as I could not get it slid past the bar.

I used ARP SS 5/16"-18x1.250 bolts to install the cover and used a Lube Locker gasket. The factory pan was sealed with some type of gray sealer and no gasket.

I could not remove the factory fill hole bolt on the axle so I ended up using the one on the new cover. Refilling the fluid is what took me forever as there was not enough room to get the bottles higher than the hole and I did not have any kind of pump to pump it in. I finally got the 2 qrts and 4oz of friction modifier in.

The factory fluid was gray in color and it left glittery specs in the bottom of the drain pan when I dumped it out. I measured the amount of factory fluid and it was exactly 2 qrts. Since I could not get the factory fill hole bolt out, I did not measure to see how far below the whole it was.

Interesting, we have the same diff cover only they aren't the same... you have two additional threaded holes on the bottom of yours and I do not. Your holes were drilled and tapped for the drain and fill and mine were not.

I saw both versions for sale when I was looking to purchase. I made sure to get the ones with the two threaded holes. I think these holes are actually for fitting this cover with an oil cooler as the farthest right cooling ridge on the cover has three threaded holes to mount something to. The bottom threaded hole is at the very bottom of the housing so it will work very well for draining the axle and getting pretty much all of the fluid out. I just need to come up with a better method of putting in the fluid. Of course I shouldn't have to change the fluid again for years.
