I found my pinion seal is leaking after less than a year in the car. Had a shop install gears with a Motive install kit. Does anyone else have any issues with the Motive seals? Are they different compared to the factory seals?

Long story short, I think I'm going to replace it myself but getting replacement parts for free. Should I stress I want a Ford seal, or does it not really matter?

While I'm in there I will check the companion flange for wear from the seal and make sure the axle vent is not clogged. Really surprised the seal is leaking so soon.

Some seals are definitely better than others. I have not had any issues with any seals in the FRPP install kits lately. I've used various aftermarket seals in the past, and some have eventually leaked, others have not.
When you replace it, also replace the pinion nut, as the seal on the end of that will get message up and you could get a little seepage from around it. I've seen that happen, too, where the pinion nut was leaking and not the pinion seal because the installer used a used nut.

My rear leaked with a Dorman pinion seal a day after gear install. Then we took it apart and did another Dorman seal. Same problem. I went to Ford and purchased a seal, took it to the mechanic and no leaks anymore. He has done lot's of older 8.8's and said he has never had the problem before my car. He did say the Ford seal fit a lot tighter and the Dorman practically fell off when removed.

Thanks for the input! I think I will go with a new Ford seal and nut.

I kind of wonder now if it's just the nut. Either way I might as well do it all while I'm in there.
