I bought a Mach 1 short block. The crank has 8 bolts and center counterweights. Everything I can find on it suggests it is a forged crank. I am aware of one 8 bolt cast crank that Ford made at one time so I'm hoping that someone can confirm for me.

These pictures show the numbers on the crank. From what I read the numbers don't mean a whole lot.

Thanks,
Bruce

Is there any sign of casting marks? It doesn't look like there are any.

The last pic shows wide casting or forging marks. One of the things I read was that narrow marks are on the cast cranks and wider marks of about .75" are on the forged cranks.

I saw those in the last picture but it didn't jump out at me as marks leftover from casting. Like you said, casting marks are usually pretty narrow.

From what Im aware of, the Manual Mach 1's came with Forged cranks the automatics did not. I think in that era all 8 bolt cranks in mustangs were forged and 6 bolts were not.

That's pretty much what the seller told me. I just wanted to verify prior to having it ground.

Looks like it's a forged unit. The wide displaced metal at the crank pins is from it being forged, cast will have a narrower line. Also as you stated the center counterr weights are forged indication on the 4.6 crank.

I believe that part number is a Kellogg Crankshaft number. Ford bought their forged cranks from Kellogg from what I understand.

The stick MACH 1's did have forged cranks. Auto's were cast. I remember reading this several times when they came out.

Also, I've read that all forged cranks had the center counter weight and none of the cast cranks had it.

As said before that is a forged crank. The forging line is about .500 wide. Cast cranks will have a casting line that is about .125 wide

Bruce, the center counter weight is the key. To my knowledge, Ford never made a cast crank with a center counter weight. Sounds like you got a good deal, now what are you going to do with it??

I know you already have your answer, but I figured I would just confirm that you do have a forged crank. Manual mach 1 mustangs used the same crank as cobras.
