Fuel Gauge Issue

The problem I am experiencing today with my fuel gauge occurred one time in the past just after I purchased my '05 V6 Mustang. I filled up my gas tank today and the fuel gauge was correct, but after driving around a little while, maybe 40 miles my gauge showed I used up a quarter tank of gas which seemed excessive. The next time I started the car the fuel gauge registered that the tank was about a quarter tank overfilled. Has anyone experienced this situation and what was the problem? The first time it happened it corrected itself the next time I started the car, not today.
