I and another fellow in my area have run into the same issue with similar builds & could really use some guidance. While on the dyno doing some driveablity tuning (cruising at 50 MPH in 3rd gear, 2300 RPM) both headers started to glow red. A/F was running between 14 & 14.5. We thought we may have had the cam timing retarded which would dump burning fuel into the exhaust. I have pulled the front cover & the cams look to be timed correctly. Matching the chain links to the marks on the cams & crank. I will degree the cams tonight to see if that shows any problems. If anyone has had similar issues or any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.

Mods list:
Livernois 298 stroker
Livernois stage 3 heads
BBR stage 2 cams (other guy has Comp stage 2)
Livernois lock outs (other guy has limiters)
GT500 dual pumps
60 lb injectors
ARH 1-3/4 long tubes (other guy has Kooks)
Procharger D1SC with 3.4 pulley (other guy has Whipple)

I'm the other guy and this problem is driving me nuts. I'm pretty sure my cam timing is right too and will be confirming tonight. What else could cause the high EGT's? Anyone?

FIND A NEW TUNER!!!!! MATT is an IDIOT!!!!!

Are you running the lockouts, and did you put them in the fully advance position? Not fully retarded.

I'm running the Livernois limiters and installed them exactly as per the instructions (except that I rotated the plate out of the way without removing the spring pin). I have pics of my limiter install - the moving vane is on the left of the limiters as in the Livernois install pic.

BTW - which Calgary tuner named Matt are you referring to (there's more than one)?

I'm talking about techmotion Mathew. I've have no experience with Matt at the mustang shop. I have however heard good things about Matt#2.

If you want to see the results of Tecmotion Matt's tuning abilities, stop by I think I still have some melted pistons lying around.

Rick (ILW84U) knows my thoughts well, and he and I are discussing solutions to his problems via PM's.

Does anybody have any experience with aftermarket adjustable cam gears for the 3V engines? Paschal Performance makes some.

We're both checking our cam centerlines. The short term fuel trims on mine were hovering between -3 and +3 at a light cruise. We didn't do any WOT pulls on mine - only cruised it for a couple minutes. Rick (ILW84U) has BBR cams in his setup.

Matthew did my car last year (Whipple HO at 10 psi, stock motor) - no problems. I'm not unhappy that we shut down the tune session until the cam timing is confirmed - better to be sure.

ILW84U and KLAW both completely tore the top end of their motors open to re-check cam timing, both to find everything was 100% correct.

Matt then told them that "it must have just been the new engines being tight"
Yeah right!!! Do you think maybe he found and changed something in their tunes without them knowing what he changes??? Are you starting to see a pattern here with this guy??

I have fired lots of new engines for the first time, and never ever seen a new one so tight it made the headers glow at idle...
