I think a few of us have wondered why Ford put them there. I decided to take the TB off today and have a look. The ribs do not extend into the intake very far. About 1" on the bottom and 1/2" on top. The do protrude into the opening a decent amount however.
Could this be for low rpm drivability? Is it for part throttle response? Hell, who knows. I said screw it and broke out the dremmel. Started with a sanding roll and finished with a sanding stone. If you decide to do this you must be careful so you do not break through the intake. That would be a very expensive mistake.
After all said and done:
I have not had the chance to drive the car yet so I could not comment on how it feels. It may have messed it up seriously or may have no affect at all. Time will tell.
