I am thinking that it now might be a cam phaser? I'm wondering if it is ok just to unplug the solenoid sensors until I order some lock outs.

If you can unplug the solenoids and it doesn't do it then it is an oil pressure problem.

I just went round and round with a friend and his F150 with the 5.4 3V that did the same thing. It has 90K miles on it. He is the kind of guy that does none of his own work and "his mechanic" is the best. I asked him if he was using motorcraft 5w20 and a FL-820S filter and he said his mechanic uses a "better" filter............and yes the oil pressure was 30psi at idle.

Well his mechanic told him it was the solenoids so they put new solenoids in it.....didn't fix it. Then his mechanic said it was the lash adjusters and tensioners causing the noise. So they put new lash adjusters, chains, guides and chain tensioners in it. $2000 later it still did it.

Well after that he finally brought it over one Saturday and I looked at it. Seems they never checked oil pressure, I know that because the sensor was never removed, also found out he was using another "better" brand oil and a "special" additive.

Long story short. Changed to Motorcraft 5-20 and FL-820S filter. That was 5000 miles ago and it hasn't done it since.

So what are the negatives if I just unplug the solenoids and drive?

1st. Your not fixing the problem.
2nd. It will throw codes.
3rd. It won't do your fuel ecomomy any favors.

I'm surprised knowone jumped in on your mobil 1 post. I'm not going to tell you what oil to run in your car but that is the oil (and a WIX filter) my buddy was running in his 5.4 when he had VCT rattle.

A lot of people run full synthetic without VCT issues.

I have run Mobile 1 and wix filter on my car for 80k miles with more track passes than I can count and I have had zero problem out of my car. It does have a motorcraft FL-1A filter on it now though and oil pressure hasn't changed any. To say that the oil(as long as it was the correct weight) and/or the filter(as long as it was the correct one) caused his problems or Randy's is a stretch.

That filter, in my opinion, is the best that I can run on the car now. Also it being longer helps changing it now that it is tucked under the bumper.

Well. I am here in myrtle beach for mustang week. So hopefully I have no problems and maybe I can find some lockouts or something at the show vendor tents

Surprisingly. The whole way. I had not a single problem. At all. But every now and then, it "acts" like it wants to happen but doesn't.
