Yesterday was my second lapping event of the season and my first at Mosport since August last year. The event was organized by Frank Ewald and $235 gets you up to 4 hours of track time in two run groups running 30 minute sessions. He has 10 marshals, an ambulance and a flatbed - just in case. My group consisted of 6 novices and Experienced drivers. The other group was Experienced and Advanced. The Novices each had individual instruction for the whole day. Passing is allowed with a point by n the front straight, between turns 3 and 4 and the back straight.

Mosport is a high speed track with 10 turns and a 2.459 mile lap. The fastest I have gone there is 137MPH/220KPH.

There are several tricky corners but many consider turn 2 to be one of the best corners in the world. It is a blind, downhill, double apex, left hander and just to make things interesting also off camber. Click on the "Application and Payment Information" information to see Turn 2. The picture above it is of Moss corner which is also pretty famous.

My day started at 6:00 AM as I pulled out of the apartment garage and had to turn on the windshield wipers. Getting closer to the track the weather started to clear so I decided to install the Nitto NT01 R-comps.

Then at the Driver's meeting it started to rain again and Frank warned everyone about how treacherous Mosport is in the wet. He said that two weeks before the Porsche Club had 5 cars hit various walls/guardrails. Fortunately no one was hurt. My brother, who was at the Porsche event as co-chief instructor and was co-driving my car at Frank's event, confirmed the story about the 5 cars and said that in one weekend that was more cars than had been damaged in all of the previous 3 years events. He also suggested I put the KDW2s back on.

My first session was done on a wet track and so it gave my brother a good chance to teach me the wet line which is basically stay off the dry line as much as possible. Later I'll post some video.

The second session was drier and so we started working on the dry line. Last year the Porsche Club updated the dry line because there is now so much concrete on the corners that the old dry line is no longer the fastest line. The new line tries to stay of the concrete and on the asphalt as much as possible.

Things cleared up and at lunch we swapped back to the R-comps and then went out and worked on my new dry line in earnest. Then it was my brother's annual opportunity to drive a real car instead of those funny foreign things. This also sets the benchmark for me to try to get close to. He started at the front of the group and seemed to feel it was necessary to catch up to the other cars. Here is some video of him having way too much fun

It was a good day overall but of course would have been better without the rain. My thanks to Frank for all of the effort he puts in to make this such a great day.
