Nitto 555R users - what's worked best for you?

What kind of tire pressure seems to be working best for you guys? I realize they aren't M&Hs and MTs, so let's get past all that. What have you guys been doing to get these things to hook? What kind of launch, etc?

well i just have to say it, get rid of the NITTOS!!!!!!!!

now that i got that out of my system, when i had nittos, they were very inconsistent and a real PITA. i can't remember what PSI i set them too, so sorry about that but waht i found worked failry well and what other Nitto users told me was that you really need to roast those tires. get em good and hot. something to do with the compound for making them live longer, they dont hold the heat like a M/T will. so you have to really roast them to get them to be anywhere near sticky. least thats waht worked for me.

I thought he was informative, he said you had to get a really good burnout, more so than normal. But I guess that wasn't good enough.

Look, I just sold a set and they were my STREET TIRES.

If you are looking for someone to sugarcoat it and tell you what you want to hear than all you're going to get is BS anyway.

The simple truth is they are not a drag strip tire...period. No amount of air pressure is going to do anything major for you. Your 'best bet' is to set them for about 26 psi but that's about the best you can do on them. The other poster was correct also - you need to really light them up to get them sticky. Your burnout should be at least 3-4 seconds at 60+ mph.

If you want to hook, the simple truth is you need a better tire. They are great for the street though IMO...

oy... You guys are acting like I don't realize that Nittos aren't the best drag radial on the planet. I bought them for a tire that will be used primarily on the street and see a lot of miles. That's the reason I didn't get the M&Hs or the MTs.

I don't need sugarcoating, just give me something informative. Mark, yours was informative. However, If I say don't feed me a bunch of crap about 'oh, you should get these', that's what it means.

I gave you the best advice bro...

24-26 psi and 3-4 second burnout at 60+ mph is the best you can do.

I run mine at 17psi, burn out for 3 to 4 seconds, leave at around 2700rpm and usually cut a low 1.6 or a high 1.5 just depending on the night

Interesting? Doc - this is on 18x10's huh? Sounds good but I would have thought 17 psi would have been too low for the weight and would have bogged.


I never tried that low, or maybe my fat pig was just too heavy...lol

Yup, the 18X10s. Doesn't seem to bog. In fact it is usually "right on the edge" of spinning pretty much all the way through first and about half of second.

Yours isn't the only porker in the pin. Gotta remember, I daily drive mine, don't intend on it being a race car, and don't do a damn thing to it when I go to the track other than letting some air out of the tires. Last time I weighed it was at FFW last October and it was 3910. And i'm pretty sure I have gained a couple of pounds since then

That is interesting though. I'll bet the majority aren't trying them that low and why they have the 'stigma' they do at the track. 1.5x-1.6x is not bad at all.

I would suggest the poster try the 17 psi scenario...

Honestly, for whatever reason (and I don't know why) the first time I ever went to the track with them I started at 20 and just worked my way down until I quit spinning. Never ever attempted to hook them at anything above 20. I can tell you that at 20 I can spin the hell out of them though. One of these days I am going to grow up and get big boy wheels and tires. But not sure if it will be this year or not since I have no idea day to day whether or not I will remain employed.

I run 17psi on the Lightning at the track on 555drs. Seems to work well.

Funny... I just read an article in 5.0 magazine and they were running 555Rs at 12.5 - 14.0 psi during a track test. But, consider the source...

Good info..I will be running Nitto's at the track this spring, and I will be driving my car to and from the track on 18's..Hawg, what do you have for rear suspension upgrades?

I run em at 15 psi and get the best times. And yea the more you roast em the better. My best 60 was 1.63 at irwindale first run after i drove from riverside. But for sure my best times have been with 15 psi and those are 20's with a 3640 pound car.

Adjustable upper, non adjustable lowers, relocation brackets, axle braces, and if I ever get off my lazy ass GT500 springs

ive cut a 1.59 on mine..they are 275/60/15 at 14psi....
