Attention - 4.6 3v M90 & TVS owners... If you have or are planning on doing a 8-rib FEAD conversion and are looking for a custom set of idler pulleys the please comment or PM me. The images below shows what they will look like - they will be machined from 6061-T6 aluminum (natural, non-anodized) and will have a nice 16 Ra (micro inch) surface finish. Cost is largely dependent on quantity - If there is enough interest I could have a few sets made.

When Carmen made custom pulleys, he used 7075 Al.... instead of 6061-T6 Al. There was a reason for it. I think the expensive 7075 was more robust, as in the belt wearing the 6061-T6.

I had originally specified 7075-T651, but the plating shop says 7075 does not anodize well, plus 6061 has far better resistance to corrosion than 7075.

To your point - Yes, the modulus of elasticity and hardness of 6061 is a bit less than that of 7075. However the difference I think is negligible as I've made blower pulleys from 6061-T6 with no issues. If concerned - ether material can be used.

Is the water pump pulley standard size 4 bolt?

lol at 8 rib'ing a m90.

Yes, but if you upgrade to the 1.9L TVS then the 8 rib makes sense.

To the OP-
IMO no need for both 3.50" and 3.55" idlers. They can be interchanged easily enough.

Also, when I had the TVS1900 and a 10% overdrive crank pulley, I could not find a belt long enough to fit. The belt I had to use was a hair short even with downsizing all of my idler pulley to the smallest possible. The next larger belt available was almost 3" longer so that was out of the question.

I only offer this so you can be aware that some customers may need to substitute smaller idler pulleys in order to make their setup work. Users need to be aware of where their tensioner falls within the range of travel. If it is too tight then they can end up possibly shattering their oil pump gears from shock load as the belt tightens under load transitions.

Folks,

It's been a while and I wanted to share an update, I finally got the pulleys machined and Black Anodized.

Before plate – I used a lathe and lightly scotch-brited them up prior to Anodizing.

After Plate - I will miss the nice brushed aluminum but these will last a lot longer with the Anodized coating… I am very happy with the end result, now I just need to press the bearings in..

I'm in for a set

How much would a set cost?

The majority of the cost is in the machine work. The plating is a lot charge fee and is optional. To put things in perspective, the one-off set that I had machined. With materials and time was little over $1k. If I had them manufactured in the masses the cost to produce them would be substantially less.

This was a personal project that has taken me some time to complete. The reason I did it is because there is nothing out there in terms of a good looking 8-rib pulley kit... I wanted a custom 8-rib pulley setup so I design my own and had them made. It uses a 2.75" blower pulley which used with my oversized ATI Super Damper should net me around 15-16 PSI. This setup will work with any 4.6 3V equipped with the single belt Roush/TVS and possibly the M90.

As you can see from the posted dates, it took me a while to get to this point… I am running a AC delete kit so I made a pulley for that too. I will get pricing to manufacture 5 and 10 sets. Stay tuned...
