Someone is gonna be replacing his spark plugs sooner than expected. No reason to put a cooler T-Stat in these cars.

boy there sure are a lot of folks telling others what is not needed. how do you know? what engineering data do you have to support that comment? id like to see it.

How about 25+ years of working on cars? Experience is what I speak from. Common sense at use here says if he's throwing codes now, wait until winter. He will run rich because the car will constantly think it's trying to warm up and his plugs will foul.

Is that good enough for you? If not, prove me wrong.

What VTXFrank said plus add another 25 years. Hmmm? Together that's 75 plus years? I guess somewhere in there we might have learned a little sumpin' 'bout coolin' systems. These engines were thrashed on over and over again in development. Run extremely hot followed quickly by extremely cold. There are few reasons to change thermostats which have been presented here.

All makes sense however it only through a code once,,,no other reported codes thrown on mine or anyother cars ..There are a bunch of these T Stats out there..I drive this car every day..The warm up has been extended ,,lets see if i get another code....Or if someone else has it happen...

My GMC threw that code yesterday. It was the coldest day so far this fall. Today the weather warmed up and the code is gone. The thermostat is getting changed this weekend. Most likely it's stuck open. Same principle as putting a cooler thermostat in a Mustang. The PCM is recognizing that it's taking longer for the coolant to reach the proper temperature.

What's the temperature at where you live today? Was it cold when the light came on? Is it it warm now?

I will have to say I wasn't a advocate of running the 170* t-stat when it was released. My mind changed when I was waiting longer at the track for my car to cool between runs vs. a friend who is using the 170. One wouldn't think that going from a 180* to a 170* would make much difference but it did.

I swapped to the 170 last week.
