Photo tutorial - take better pics of your mustang

Indoor pics - yes. Sports - maybe, but not frequent and less important. Size/weight is a factor. Budget is less than a grand, but it looks like you can't get a decent DSLR at that price. At least according to this guy:

If you are not worried about how bulky the camera is you could do a few things:

You could go with this brand new for $650:

I used a Canon t1i for 4 years until I finally stepped up to a 7D with a 24-105 L lens--but I got them used BNIB from a guy who had even better cameras and this was his back up set up, which he never used. There are deals out there.

Both of those are good beginner DSLRs -- and will server you well for years if you are just an occasional shooter. But just a warning, if you get serious in photography, you will out grow these cameras at some point.

If you do NOT want a bulky camera, look into the mirror less cameras by Nikon and Sony. I cousin just got a Nikon one, it took excellent pictures, and it was 1/2 the size.

In that first one, the building in the background is distracting. Go back to that spot if you can, and reposition the car so that the building disappears. Looks like a decent spot for a shot. If you would have gotten a little lower with the camera, it would have been gone.

IMO, the first one would be much better with the following:
1. Wheels turned a bit to the right.
2. A pic with out that huge support beam/column directly right behind the car.

Taking pictures of black wheels is a hard thing too.

I purchased a used Nikon D5100 off craiglist for $500. It came with the kit 18-55 lens, but also included a nice Nikon 55-200 lens so that made the deal pretty good IMO.

If you don't feel comfortable buying used, I would suggest getting on slickdeals.net and setting up a keyword notification for something like "dslr" or "camera." You can find awesome pricing there, and usually on bundles, which includes several things you will probably need anyway (camera bag, mono/tripod, memory cards, etc). Just be aware that a lot of those 'deals' are gray market items or refurbished units. Research before you buy!

Reposition the car so the cement column is not behind the car. Move the car back so the shot is completely in the shade. Be aware of your background, and whats in it. Try taking several shots and different angles and heights, and select your favorites after.

I love panning shots. I wonder what is going on here? I took this one a couple years ago at SCSN7.......kind of makes you wonder what is dumped on the track by the guy in front of you that officials may not see.....

Here is the affect of using the largest possible aperture (low number). It limits your depth of field, which will make a potentially distracting background out of focus, which will focus attention on the subject. This is especially popular in portrait photography but as you see here, can be used for car pics as well.

I'm considering selling my Canon T4i and the lenses. I just think it is overkill and I really don't use half the features. Does anyone have a recommendation for a nice camera that is for the lack of better words... idiot proof and just works simple? Lol

That's a sweet shot Paul. I wish I owned a good 2.8 lens but fortunately for me someone I am friends with will let me borrow his whenever I want.

This is probably my favorite that I've shot so far with a 70-200 2.8 lens...

My second favorite was this...a perfect "caption this" type photo. The funny thing is what was actually being discussed was pretty funny....the guy in the middle ended up buying chinese food at an Amish market where all the meats and baked goods are phenominal so the guy on the right won't let him live it down.
