Pilot Bearing?

Hi all! I am deep into repairs on my 2005 V6 4.0 manual. Since I have the engine out, I decided to replace the clutch as well. I got a whole new kit online but I’m having a hard time figuring out what to do with the pilot bearing. The flywheel that came off had the pilot bearing in it. The center hole on the new flywheel is way too big for the new pilot bearing that came with it. Is there something else I need to get? Can I put the pilot bearing in the crankshaft?

Really? Never heard of that on a v6.
Yes, it’s the same for the flex plate on the sport trac.

I really want to put this engine back in tomorrow and I REALLY want to be sure I can make this work. I swear all the videos I’ve seen have the bearing in the flywheel, just like the flywheel I took out.

Maybe it is in the flywheel on the v6. I don't think I've ever seen one like that. But my memory has gotten horrible since the stroke.

at the 4.6 the pilot bearing is a 2 piece item . The needle bearing and the race are physicaly two parts. So perhaps you pulled the inner needle ringe..and the sleeve /race is still in the crank ?

From the internet: For the Ford 4.0L V6, the pilot bearing is installed inside the flywheel, not in the crankshaft. The correct orientation is with the numbered side (or two notches, depending on the specific bearing type) facing towards the engine/crankshaft.

From another Mustang forum.

I appreciate it. Im just about certain this is right. I was hoping to get a little more definitive answer from people with first hand experience, but on multiple forums I’m just about only getting people talking about what they think they know from working on a totally different engine and they’ve just about all been wrong. It’s been pretty frustrating.

Sorry I only own Mustang 4.6 GT and LX 5.0L V8s but there is enough info out there to confirm the pilot bushing goes inside the flywheel on certain Ford 4.0L V6.
