Ramps or jack stands?

Hello all,

What do you guys prefer for DIY under the car work? Im thinking of getting some ramps but i have never used them and the idea scares me a little lol. Anyone recommend a good brand for ramps?

Cheaper, and can make them to fit our wheel widths no problem. Darin has a design that he shares which a hollow portion to help save weight. I still have to build his new design, but the last couple of times I have worked on the car since installing the Roush splitters, I would have rather had the custom ramps.

Or, if you're not a crafter, you want to be safe, and ramps scare you.... get both. Stands are pretty cheap and you can throw them under the car after you have it up on ramps before you craw underneath, may freak you out a little less.

Im still riding on stock height... I shouldnt have any problems getting up an average ramp should I?

I have to go on my ramps to even fit my jack under the car.

I use both, ramps quicker for like oil change but can be in way for other things. Either way I need helper boards to get jack under or extend ramp angle

I have both. I do prefer ramps but they can't be used if you're taking off the wheels.

Both. Sometimes you need the suspension loaded, sometimes you don't.
Walmart sells rhino ramps for a good price.

I'd be more scared of jack stands than ramps. I've had a pair of Rhino ramps for so long I can't remember when I bought them. Maybe 15 yrs? They are extremely sturdy. Even under the weight of a crew cab pickup. I don't sweat it when I use those ramps. Ramps are quick and convenient. Just don't get those flimsy metal ones

Having said that, jack stands are must if you're going to do more than oil changes.

I must of grabbed the wrong ramps. My front bumper won't clear the ramp.

Most S197s (especially if they're lowered) won't clear "standard" ramps. You need race ramps.

Ramps are far safer than jack stands if you put blocks behind the wheels still on the ground.

Both. I use ramps, jackstands, and put my tires/rims underneath the car (if they're off). I'm terrified of being crushed and laying there for three days while my family goes about its business - which they would do because I rank lower than the cat in my household.

I use both. The 2-piece race ramps were a godsend for both the supercharger and headers installs, but there are a lot of mods you need the wheels off for.

I also use both. My car is fairly low, so I have to drive up on 2X4s just to get the jack under the car.

I have/use both Race ramps and jack stands. Yes, RR are pricey, but IMO are well worth it.

Have both but usually use a floor jack and jack stands. Why? Because I can jack it up in just a few seconds compared to setting up the ramps and hoping they don't slide when I drive the car on them. My ramps also won't let the stock height CS air dam/valance/front spoiler clear so they are for rear only. I've even jacked the car up and put ramps under the wheels because it's that much easier than trying to drive on the ramps, lining them up, etc.

Have and use both. Although, like most people, my car's too low for the ramps. Hell, m,y car's too low for my floor jack, haha. I have to use the scissor jack to get the car up high enough to get the floor jack under it.

+1 for rhino ramps, great addition to the garage
