Not sure if this is the right section, moderator please advise, but it seems to be a technical issue.

The passenger air bag off warning light on the overhead map light console of my 2013 GT Premium seems to have a mind of its own when there's no one in the passenger seat. Most of the time it does not light at all, on some occasions it will light for an initial few miles, then go out while other times it does not light up at all. A couple of times it's come on and stayed on through my whole drive.

I do throw my lap top back pack over on the passenger seat sometimes, but most of the time there's no computer in there. Most of the time the light does not come on. When it has come on I tried shoving my bag onto the floor on the passenger side and it made no difference. I can't seem to decipher under what conditions it will or will not illuminate when there's no one occupying the passenger seat.

There are weight sensors in the seat and the computer will turn off the airbag when it senses some weight in the seat but not enough to be an adult human. A bag of groceries, a box or a laptop bag will most certainly trigger the sensor to turn off the airbag.

Thanks I suspected such. My bag must be right on the border line of the weight limit to account for the inconsistent behavior then? So if there's nothing in the passenger seat at all, the warning light won't illuminate. Does that mean the air bag is armed anyway?

Probably not, but you'll have to confirm with somebody who knows for sure. My guess is that it's a 'smart' system and won't discharge an airbag unless there is enough weight to indicate an adult person is in the seat. The manufacturers had to make it like that because an airbag going off on a small child could inflict more damage than it prevents.

Most use a few lbs as the base weight to trigger the airbag off warning.

If there is no weight on the seat, the bag shouldn't deploy but the warning light won't be on. If there is more than a few lbs the airbag off light will illuminate. Otherwise it will only deploy if there is about 120 or more lbs on the seat.

X2 the light just indicates that something is in the seat but its not a butt... have someone sit in the seat and have them shift to one cheek. Goodway to check if your significant other is trying to keep fart juices out of the seat by lifting a leg lolol
