All the popcorn is gone, what a project. I used a pump up sprayer to spray it with warm water and it scraped off easily enough but what a mess. Thankfully I have a big cement bathtub out in the back yard so I was able to wash off afterward.

I'm going to start throwing drywall in the holes tomorrow. I can get it up on the wall but like Gabe I will leave the mud work to the pros.

Although, after my pro left, I re-sanded everything again, since his sanding left a bit to be desired.

Popcorn ceiling ... at least yours wasn't painted in high-gloss paint ... that's the reason I had to replace the whole ceiling in my bathroom ... huge popcorn and high gloss paint ... these 2 things are a combo the devil must've come up with

Got the knock down texture on the 4 bedroom ceilings. Conrad instructed me on holding the shield along the top of the wall to keep the mess from getting on the walls too much. The shield was about 12" tall and about 3' wide but that damn hopper was shooting out crap 20' in all directions. I still had to scrape all the walls top to bottom to get the texture off. We started the second bedroom and I said "Screw this, just spray it and I'll scrape it afterwards." I was covered in so much crap I felt like it was some sort of practical joke.

After the texture was done I got in a few more hours of scraping loose paint and a couple hours putting drywall patches into holes. Tomorrow I will be able to paint the ceilings which will really help me begin to see some progress. With the ceilings painted I can install the nice fans and light fixtures I have to replace some of the crappy ones there.

First coat of paint on the ceilings, plus all the cutting in around the edges with a brush. Several more hours on drywall today.

I think I'm going to try and get the living room painted so I can start moving furniture in. I'm really going nuts with nobody showing up to help as scheduled and I really need to begin seeing some action. 10 days and the only thing anybody has shown up to do is the textured ceilings. Still no electrical guy, no well/pump guy, no plumber and I can't finish the drywall until the plumbing and electrical are done. Then I still need to build at least one bathroom and install flooring in the bedroom.

Starting to get a little bit of headway. Today the electrician showed up for a few hours and got the breaker panel swapped out. He is coming back tomorrow to do the outside panel plus a few other things I've found around the house.

I'm running out of stuff to do without the pros showing up (plumber, well guy, drywall guy) so I focused on getting a couple areas ready to move in some furniture. The living room is mostly fine except for paint and I can fit half my house in there so I got the first coat of paint at the end that doesn't have any drywall repairs. I also painted the two walls in the dining room that will end up being my office area. Since I will be living here by myself and spend a lot of time online, there's no reason to hole up in one of the spare bedrooms. I'll still have plenty of room towards the kitchen for the dining table and chairs. I will also have the counter between the kitchen and living room for dining.

Painting and drywall take a long time! The prep is killing me, and the paint I'm using simply will not cover completely in one coat regardless of what they claim. Even if it looks good when you put it on, it will leave streaks and light spots when it dries. I spent all day plugging away at the paint and drywall while my electrician finished up the panel replacements as well as figuring out a couple other problems we discovered.

My plumber and well guys showed up this afternoon (they work together) and took notes on what I need so hopefully we will make some progress on the bathrooms and well issues. If they can get those issues resolved this week then I can move in as soon as I build the bathroom.

Good primer will help the paint. Otherwise the drywall will just keep sucking it in. And I don't mean the paint with primer supposedly in it. LOL

I was using the ceiling paint as a primer coat on the walls (plain, cheap white paint) and it helped but I still needed two coats on top of it because of the streaking.

I'm exhausted. Been working 12+ hour days on this house for a week and a half. I might try to take it easy today.

Quality paint seems ridiculously expensive, but I've been learning my lesson it's worth it not having to do multiple coats and when you use less the price per gallon isn't so bad. Heck my buddy just redid drywall in a room, bought expensive paint, didnt prime and it covered it perfectly in one coat.

The two gallons I got for my bedroom the girl used the most expensive base they had, was over $45 per gallon. That's what I get for not specifying. Thick as pudding and still needed two coats in places. I dropped down to the medium priced ($35 per gallon) for the rest of the house and cheap $20 per gallon stuff for the ceilings.

My problem is that I think I go over it too many times. I've resigned myself to the fact that I'm not getting it done in one coat. Even if I did, I would still find spots where it was streaked or thin. I'd rather take the time to put on a second coat than look at streaks for the next 10-15 years. I would know where every bad spot was in the entire house.

The problem with all box store paints is that the quality of the paint is dictated by the price point that the box store puts on the manufacture ( same for most items at box stores most likely) paint is for sure one of those items that you get what you pay for. The one coat thing is all marketing to get someone to buy that can of paint. There are to many variables to say whether something can cover in one coat. Plus you always want to do two coats. It provides the proper film build and will give you a longer lasting more washable surface.

I NEVER ever buy paint from anywhere but here http://www.vistapaint.com/ or some other professional paint place. I learned a long time ago that painting something twice really pisses me off. I went from a beige to off white in my sons room and got it done in one coat with vista. Fuck home depot, lowes or whatever hardware store claims that they cover in one coat. They are full of crap.

Taking a short day today, I'm freaking exhausted. I have functional lights in all three of the spare bedrooms (need a bracket to hang the ceiling fan in the master bedroom), all of my drywall patches are in place except for the plumbing areas in the bathrooms, new mailbox is installed and I spent another couple hours painting.

is your work schedule so slow this time of the year or are you just working 20 hours a day between the business and the house?

Actually I took some time off work. My big landscaper clients are busy mowing grass so they can get by without me and my main partner has been busy with other projects. I've had about $10K of work sitting and waiting on me for about 2-3 weeks now. I need to figure something out because I have at least 2 jobs I was supposed to do before the end of the month.

Thanks for the push, Dave. Got a call this morning from my tree company owner buddy telling me he had the crew out chipping up some stuff on a job up the road and did I have any jobs that needed to get done? I immediately switched into tree mode and knocked out a small job for a property management company (vacant rental house, trim the trees off the roof). Took me an hour, guys showed up as I was finishing and we got it all cleaned up. Then we went back to my house and I brushed out the 3 dead oaks in the front yard. That took almost an hour.

Then my plumber buddy made himself available for the afternoon. We met at Home Depot, bought a couple shower valves and other supplies. I ended up making another trip later and spent almost $500 just on plumbing supplies for the two bathrooms. But now I have all new valves and shutoffs in both bathrooms so I can close up the walls and begin my shower pan tomorrow.
