Yesterday on my way to work my fuel pump went out. The car lost power and then proceeded to struggle to get going. It felt like it wanted to stall out and die. Pulled off safely and waited for a tow truck. After getting the car towed to ford they called me today saying my fuel pump went out. I was just wondering what the normal life span of these are usually supposed to be? I have never had to get a fuel pump replaced so Im not used to this repair.

I changed my OE pump out at aprox. 68K miles. I was having the problems described in a TSB (hesitation after a period on cruise control), and problems with the fuel level sensor. The new pump (fairly easy swap) cured both problems.

I'm not sure on the S197's....but on Fox bodied cars there was an issue with burning up the pump if you continuously ran around with less than 1/4 tank of gas. The fuel in the tank keeps the pump cool....and with the return style system on Fox cars...it would keep circulate the hot fuel over an over and the pumps would run hot and burn out.

That is one advantage of the returnless system: The pump is only drawing as much power as is required to fuel the engine. The old systems where running full bore against the pressure regulator and what ever wasn't "needed" was simply dumped back into the tank waiting for the next trip. That's sort of like running around with the throttle on the floor and regulating your speed with the brake...

Like most newer cars, it is returnless. Manufacturers are being driven to returnless systems for emission reasons.

with our saddle bag gas tanks.......would a 1/4 tank of gas only be 1/8th on each side? or does it all pump from the passenger side to keep the driver side as full as possible? so anything below a half and the passenger side is actually empty? how do these things work?

They are a bit complex. The short answer is the pump uses a siphon tube to constantly pull fuel from the passenger side to the driver side (pump side). So yes, at 1/2 tank, the passenger side is empty and the driver side is full. Or close to it. Of course, I might have the sides swapped, but I THINK it is the drivers side that has the fuel pump in it.
