the stock spare tire is 5" wide (i had it measured with a set of calilpers at discount tire)

so i'm looking for a tire that will fit this rim for temporary dragstrip use. 205/55/17's are a little short imho...it'll leave the front end almost an inch lower than it is now..i think not ideal for launching

a 215/55/17 is only about .3 shorter than the tires i have on the front now, but that's three sizes larger than the 185/60/17's that come originally on that rim

what's the tallest tire you would feel safe about running on those wheels?

205/55/17? corner carving obviously isn't a concern. since my last to trip to the track i will have added longtubes and d-specs, so i'm hoping also to shed a little weight going to the ghetto skinnies in hopes of perhaps cracking a 12.60 maybe

FWIW, I run 27.5x4.50 tires on my 15" fronts. So I don't see any problem running tires in the 27"-28" range on 17s.

i asked the question wrong. i should have asked how tall in relation to the aspect ratio....for example a 215/60/17 is 27" tall, but it's shouldn't go on a rim smaller than 6.0

a 205/55/17 i think would fit okay, but it's a little shorter than I want, the sidewalls aren't as tall and i'm thinking it may be just as difficult to mount that tire even though it's narrower.

let me ask it this way....by size....(e.g. 215/55/17) what's the tallest widest tire that will fit on the 17x5 spare rim? safely, of course
