I am planning to get a tuner and load up a tune come spring. The driving season is just about over in Western NY. I also plan to get either a 4.10 or a 4.30 ring and pinion set installed.

I am thinking that maybe next year I might try to go to a out of state Mustang event with the car. So I got to thinking maybe for traveling there might be a benefit to loading a highway tune. Has anyone tried something like this?

There's really no need for two tunes. A good tuner will get you power and good mileage while cruising. They can add a little lean bias for cruising. The reason they can do this is because WOT and cruising use two different parts of the map.

EDIT - Justin at VMP can hook you up.

We tune for both in one tune.

Optimal power and still get great MPGs. hell, I got 34 MPG's in my 2011 turbocharged 600 hp Mustang to and from Mustang Week this year. That's over 1,000 miles round trip.

Give VMP a call. I got a "regular" tune from him for my car. 127500 cams, LTs, CAI and a few other odds and ends. I have 3.55s in the car and I can get up to 28-29 MPG cruising on the hwy around 65 and 24/25 at 80.

In my '06 with all the normal bolt-ons and 3.73s I was getting 26-28 mpg with a bama tune.

My 2011 auto with o/r Xpipe, JLT cai, and tune is only getting 22

Tune for both.

The throttle will control the MPG. If you stay out of it a good tune that is lean under light load will get good mileage.
In fact, you can get significantly better mileage than stock if youre not worried about NOx emissions. Ive seen cars tuned down into 16+ AFR in cruise, you just have to give it enough timing to keep it from bucking.

I have no idea how the hell you guys get that type of gas mileage. Best I've ever gotten was 24 mpg in the 4 years I've owned this car. And that's when it was STOCK with the 3.55 gears!

Now I get ~18 on the highway and ~12 in town, and my shit isn't really modded much.

This was all calculated by hand. The onboard computer lies to me.

As the car sits now (totally stock) I've gotten 26 mpg by the computer over a 700 mile round trip... almost exclusively highway.

Amen to that...I call BS unless I see some hard evidence.

This. Tried and true, calculated by hand, I get 19-20 average MPG. CAI/tune, stock gears, little to no WOT-action.

This can also have something to do with traffic conditions, quality of gas in your area, etc. I personally get better gas-mileage on the 87 street Bama tune that I have if I use ethanol-free gas. I can accomplish about 24-25mpg hwy on that tune. With the 93 race tune I get between 18-20 hwy and 15 city on <10% ethanol gas.

That's because most people look at their car's message board instead of calculating the MPG. My onboard says I get 25mpg on the highway but I actually get 20mpg. After modding, people don't have the onboard adjusted.
