Im gonna try to make this short and sweet.

I bought the car about a month or two ago.

I have this whirring noise from the rear end over 20mph.

I just replaced both wheel bearings, fluid and diff cover. Still have the noise

Is this normal?? You can hear it in this video when i get off the throttle.

I never noticed it and then put the seats down to put golf clubs in the trunk, and it is LOUD with them down. Pinion bearing seems tight.

Thanks

Joe

Pinion Bearing feeling tight does not in any way tell you if there is a bearing issue. Pinion preload could be off. Backlash could be off. You are going to need to have a further inspection done to see the inside of the differential. How many miles? The seat cushions actually work as a sound deadener. The other thing to look into is the upper control arm. Bushing might be collapsed causing the noise to be amplified.

Its got 79,000 miles on it. The car is all stock other than the mufflers. I would find it surprising if there was an issue with the diff at this milage but i can take it in

Thanks for the reply

It is very possible.

In the end it doesn't matter if it is the pinion or carrier bearing, I guess you have won an overhaul. My pinion bearing was gone at 25.000 miles (but it was the old style weak one).

Thanks for the input, what year is your car? Curious if mine is the old style. My breather is on the passenger tube.

07 so you should have the new one already. If you don't change the gears or diff, just to change the bearings is not too difficult, just time consuming. And you need some tools.
