I'm in the middle of a new build and can only find some scattered info on the differences in coyotes from 2011-present.
Basically if you could choose any year or version of the coyote which is he better one?
I've done some searches and found a few things but not a ton.
I'm going to have my buddy get me a low mileage used engine and want to know if there's one to go for or stay away from.
Doing a true street fox body with a coyote and a single turbo. Need to make around 700rwhp. I should be able to do this with a SBE right?
Thanks for the info

Someone will chime in with some tech just now but my understanding is the coyote went through several minor changes between 2011-2013-2015. I could be completely making this up so someone slap me if I'm talking shit but I seem to remember reading somewhere that the 2013 had some block revisions as far as coolant passages go. Isn't there a slight change in the heads on the 2015 coyote?

Doubt you'll have a lot of luck trying to find a used 2015 block just now but I'd say the later the model year the better.

Ron - I understand what you're getting at, however they way you phrased the "choose the better one" is not considered Tech here.

However, there is not a big difference in the motors that I'm aware of other than the loss of the oil squirters in mid MY 2012 IIRC

700 Whp on a stock long block is pushing it

I don't know what "SBE" stands for.

I think he means Small block engine?

I think the 2013 is your best bet. As stated above it believe ford changed the cooling passages as they were a cause for failure on the 11-12 cars. I'm not 100% on the specifics but just based on the way the market works the longer something has been out typically the newest version is always the "better"

From what I understand for MY 2013 the oil squirters are gone, the pistons got a new coating (presumable for better wear/friction), and some other minor tweaks & improvements. I have not heard about any changes for MY 2014--that seemed to be a "treading water waiting on S550 release" year. Power went from 412 to 420.

IIRC from what I've read for MY 2015 there were tweaks to the factory tune and some head work resulting in the bump to 435 HP.

I'm biased, but I think 2013-214 is the way to go.

SBE - stock bottom end?

And that's the nicest "This isn't tech" I've ever heard out of you. Getting soft, eh?

2015 version if you ask me. Revised higher flowing ported heads with 1mm larger intake and exhaust valves, higher lift intake and exhaust cams and stiffer valve springs. Revised intake manifold design, does have charge motion plates now as well. Forged crank, forged rods and cast aluminum pistons. I have heard rumors of revised coolant passages in the block as well to make it stronger but not sure if that's true.

Some evidence indicates a new block in the 2015 with material added where the blocks fail.

If you don't count the Boss 302 in your list then i'd vote for the 13-14 on the used market, but the 15 block will be the between the Boss and the 13-14 motors.

Generally it's about use and mileage, not any particular issue with any year. there is nothing to "stay away from" other than something beaten on. The squirters being there or not was never a failure mode in any of these engines.

You're well advised to look into use and mileage, as the prices for these engines on the used market can be pretty astronomical and you want to be sure you get what you pay for.

i think it's fairly inexpensive to get a stock block from a 11 or 12 and install boss components, making the block a bit more stout and worry free for your power level goals.
it's actually what i'll be doing to my 12. boss pistons and rods, slap a intercooled paxton, gtg. lol

As bare blocks go I believe F150 blocks are identical in every way.

Thanks guys. That's what I was looking for. Found a 2013 f150 long block with 6k miles for $2800 vs a 2011 with 65k miles for $2450...
Decision was made to go for low mileage 2013 coyote.
Thanks for the help.
Sorry about the SBE (stock bottom end) thing...been hanging around those LS 5.3 guys too much lately listening to their crap. I wanna build something to go kick their ass now. Wait til you see what I got coming for this :)

FYI the "2013 has no pistons squirters" is not necessarily true. I know this for a 100% fact because a friend of mine with a 2013 had an engine issue and we both physically saw the engine at the Ford dealer torn down, and it had squirters...

I was told that the truck engine never had the squirters but I'm taking that with a grain of salt.
I'll pull the pan when it gets here and see what I have.

Your choice isn't bad at all. The F150 and the Mustang Coyote are mechanically identical except for the intake cams, 1/2 point down in compression and a different intake manifold.

The controls pack for the Coyote doesn't look as friendly as for the LS engine but, it is available, if not particularly cheap.

Interesting. Everything I had read implied they were removed for MY2013 (really a running change in 2012).

I didn't mean to imply they were a reliability issue--I've never read anything to that effect. Just pointing out that was apparently one of the changes made. I have been inferring that the removal was part of the 8HP gain from 2012 to 2013.

I think regardless of year, any Coyote would be a good choice. I think this will go down as one of Ford's legendary engines.
