First of all I want to say I love this place! The best Mustang forum on the internet IMO. Two months ago I was with my GF who was car shopping for a Ford Expedition for herself when I spotted a vista blue 2007 Mustang GT on the lot. It had a stick shift in it and only 35K miles. The car was super clean inside and out. I wasn't planning on buying a car for probably another year but when I saw it was being advertised for $14,500 I just couldn't pass it up. Other 3V mustangs with that kind of mileage were going for 17-18K in this area.

I admit it was an impulse buy. I used to have an intake, exhaust, cam only LS1 Formula that ran 11.5 @ 117 so I am no stranger to american muscle cars and modding. But I am new to Mustangs. So without doing any research I put 2K down on the car and financed the rest. For the past 2 months I have been using the search feature to research this car, the mods it likes, the limits of the stock transmissions and stock bottom ends, ect.

The car all ready has 4.10 gears, CAI and Magnaflow catback. I liked the idea of adding Detroit Rocker Cams, LT headers, ORH and a 75 shot of N20 (should put me close to 400 rwhp which is safe enough for the stock motor and hopefully the stock 3650). I also kicked around the idea of a supercharger even though I might have to save a bit more money first.

But that is not my real dilema. While researching 4.6 3V's I inadvertently learned a lot about 4V 5.0's at the same time. The idea of 12's stock and 11's with bolt-ons is very appealing. So for shits and grins I searched carsguru to see what 2011 Mustang GT's were going for in my area. I could pick one up with 30-50K miles for right around 20K. Since I got such a good deal on my car two months ago and put 2K down I figure my 2007 is worth as a trade-in what I owe.

So what would you do if you were in my shoes? Keeping in mind I have not had the car long enough to be emotionally attached to it and thus far have not put a penny into mods. Choices are:

1). Keep the 2007 GT and go with the bolt-ons, DR cams and n20 along with a good tune from Brenspeed.

2). Keep the 2007 GT and save until I can afford a supercharger.

3). Trade the car in on a 2011 5.0 and mod it up!

I admit that is what I have been leaning towards. I'll be out the 2K I put down on the 2007 but live and learn I guess. I've also been reading a lot of the old 5.0 vs 3V threads or should I say pissing matches. Funny thing is that they totally reminded me of the LS1 vs LT1 debates back in the day. Same exact arguments too.

"Mine's faster, newer and God's gift to the world!"

"Yeah but mines paid for, faster then yours with lots of mods my exhaust sounds better!"

LOL

Thanks for the input.

What's your reason for wanting the Detroit Rockers? I'm sure it's different now but I remember reading horror stories about tuning issues. I did the FRPP Hotrods and loved them. Just a thought.

Keep it stock and get an FRPP Whipple kit. It will be less than trading and you will have a nicer looking car.

Just all the research I did seemed to indicate that the detroit rockers made slightly more power then the hod rods and slightly better lower rpm manners. I wasn't worried about tuning because Brenspeed is only 2.5 hours away and I would have them install whatever cams I got and tune it for me.

I got to admit that I agree with the majority of people here. I like the 5.0 engines much better but the 05-09 cars look better, especially the back ends. That's part of what makes this decision so hard for me. I think my car looks better than 5.0's so part of me wants to mod it.

But another part of me says the 5.0 has so much more potential for getting into 10's cheaper and more reliably. It's a tough choice.

Brenspeed will only tune for specific combos (combos for which they have the base tune files). If your build doesn't fit into one of their premade tunes then they won't tune it for you. If you're having Brenspeed tune it then make sure you consult them before making any mods and confirm they will tune it first.

I planned to to talk to them first. But all they would be tuning is detroit rockers that they sell along with LT's that I would buy from them as well. I'm pretty sure they can tune that. Especially if I pay to have them dyno tune it. I've read they are one of the best so I'd be shocked if they had any tuning issues with just exhaust, thier custom cams and a tiny 75 shot.

What Bruce said. If I was to go back and do it all again I'd forget all the mods and save straight for the supercharger. FRPP whipple and you're safe, ready to go and able to keep the pace with the Coyotes. The amount of times I've kicked myself for not going down this route straight away. Cams could have waited, long tubes could have waited, CMDPs, UDPs, etc etc etc. In the end you spend more time and money on installing and tune revisions as it would cost to go straight to the supercharger and build up from there. Plus you've already got the best body shape ;)

Looking at FRRP's site... the 550 crank hp /11 psi kit, that uses the whipple does 500rwhp on their FRPP dyno graph. IMO, that's pushing your luck. Either the rods will snap, and /or the tranny won't take it. Blow either of those up..and you are into a deep money pit.

I'd get the 11+ car used... maybe add LT's + catted H, DSS-DS, K+N drop in air filter, replace the upper grille with a 7 bar grille, then re-tune the entire mess for 93/94 octane..and call it a day. You would be at 440 rwhp. If you want more power down the road, then add your favorite blower of the week. Then your up to just under 600 rwhp. Resale value on the 11+ cars would be higher.

The 550hp "BIG BOOST" kit does yes but what's wrong with the 8psi 475hp Whipple kit or the 9-10psi 500hp kit? Or the Roush TVS2300 475hp kit? All proven time and time again to remain safe at a relatively low boost level. Perfect entry level daily driver superchargers with plenty of room to grow. The Ford calibration is always on the safe side and leaves a lot on the table to be 'tweaked' out with a custom tune later on down the road.

Agreed the re-sale value on the 2011+ would be better but it still wouldn't look as good as the 05-09. Maybe i'm just biased and living in denial.

though like a few said and I agree, I like the 05-09 body style better but if I didn't like my car so much AND have so much into it i'd make the jump for the extra horses then eventually supercharger the 5.0 for even more power.

Have you looked into the DOB GT450 kit? Way cheaper than trading in for a 5.0 and still faster than a 5.0 with bolt ons (you can get a 5.0 up to 450 rwhp, but not 450 ft-lbs at low RPM w/o a blower). I would vote keep the '07 and add a blower (no other performance mods needed).
