What's that sound?

Long story short, my little brother toasted my clutch at track day. The car still drives, but there's an obnoxious clutch smell. That being said, we're replacing the clutch tomorrow, so no big deal.

However, I have a question. If I bump the throttle from low RPM and then come right back out of it, or- if I am just daily driving at low RPM from one gear to another, the car makes an awful rattling/grinding sound for a few seconds, then goes away.

Likewise though, if I just punch the shit out of it, the car launches hard and there are no noises (that I can hear between blower and exhaust). Is it just the sound of the clutch because it's wasted- but hard clamping force isn't being effected?

The only reason it matters is the fact that we were trying to Dyno tune the car tomorrow before we do the clutch install.

dyno tune before installing the clutch?

good luck with that.................. :thud:

IMO you'll blow past the clutch and will not be able to get a good pull to work with

Yeah- we're just going to see if it holds. If it doesn't, no big deal- we'll get it tuned next week or something. It's got a VMP tune right now.

Time to get a new little brother.

I've been looking.

Welp. Turns out the noise was the throw out bearing. It had become so loose that the mounting holes had become misshapen from rattling around so much.

Clutch is toast, throw out is toast, flywheel is toast, transmission was a bitch to get out- to the point that the entire blower had to be removed. So- guess who's spending the night in Richmond!?

Slowly going back together now. We'll see if I make it home in a Mustang tonight.

Be careful not to pinch the wiring harness when installing the trans. Ask me how I know.

Made it out of Richmond last night around 8pm EST.

Want to thank the crew at Performance Autosport for going well above and beyond in an effort to accommodate me and ensure that the car got done yesterday. I could string out an entire list of nightmare issues they had with the car while I was hanging out, but for a shop to help find hotel accommodations, lend the use of personal vehicles, working until past 8pm on a Friday and Saturday night, etc. really provides a different perspective on things when shit hits the fan.

The car drives completely different, the tune is spot on and I couldn't be happier at the moment. The nightmare is over for now.
