Why is the spindle nut "one time use only"?

I'm replacing my front hubs, and I have to ask the obvious question: Why does the spindle nut need to be replaced every time? Is it a torque-to-yield issue? Does the locking feature wear out after one tightening sequence? I really don't mind replacing it, but it does seem silly. Anyone have any facts on this?

Your correct in guessing that it's torque to yield and due to that it has a possibility of backing off if reused. Spindle nuts are one of the few "one time use" nuts I actually replace.

I believe the threads deform and break slightly as it's tightened, serving a locking function kind of like a nylock.

If you buy a new set of hubs, they should come with the nuts.

I bought a set of the "Premimum" units from Orylies and I had to get the nuts seperate. I still have roaring from the front. I am going to get it in the air this weekend and check them out and check the nut.

All brand new Whiteline. I am thinking it may be the rear wheel bearings or the carrier bearing.

I bought a set of the "Premimum" units from Orylies and I had to get the nuts seperate. I still have roaring from the front. I am going to get it in the air this weekend and check them out and check the nut.

As for the "one Use Only". The books do not say if it is torque to yield or not. It does have a suggested Torque of 251 Ft LB. I have heard multiple answers. I have heard that the nut is not 100% perfectly round and once removed it distorts. For the price of the nut, it is easy enough to replace. I can also tell you from being in the business for a long tome that "Most" aftermarket Hubs and some of the Rotor/Hub units for the Trucks require the usage of a Ford Replacement. Have not really found many suitable aftermarket companies that have a component that lasts for the customer.

I was thinking that but when you do "S" turns it does not change pitch. Before I replaced them they would change pitch when I went side to side.

one of the only aftermarket bearing companies id trust is Timken. they have never let me down.

sadly i reused that spindle nut after sand blasting my knuckles and now 3k miles later im getting some wheel bearing noise...fuck.

Timken and Motocraft are the only way to go. I would try to return the oreillys ones for a refund. That may not happen though. Check rockauto.com for some motocraft ones.

What year is the car? Gt or Shelby?

I will have to look at the receipt but I think they were made by timken. It's an 05 GT. I put all brand new suspension under the car the weekend before thanksgiving. The noise was their before and still their. That's why I was figuring it was the carrier bearing or rear wheel bearings since everything was newbut those. I have a 1 piece shaft but I bought it off fleabay an the guy said it was for a 07 GT but its 2" short on trying to fit it. I am going to make a 7056 alum spacer and bolt it up hopefully in the next week or so.
