It is possible. Impedance on canbus needs to be maintained at a fixed value. 120 ohms is the standard +/- 1%. Messing with shielding, and/or the twist in the wire can hamper proper data transfer which can lead to issues with coms between devices. It's best to get control of your OCD in the case of canbus data buses and leave them alone IMHO. You aren't improving anything by messing with them as they are working properly and can only put coms at risk by doing otherwise.

As for the in depth details on canbus communications I can only refer you to google and do a search to do some research on it as I am not a data protocol communications expert.



I'm not really doing anything besides re wrapping wiring in certain areas of the car. I was just going to re-crimp a couple splices that could have been done better.

I'm not trying to re wire the whole car with different sizes wires or anything.

I understand that. Just trying to save you some frustration by injecting a problem in your "cleanup" process that could otherwise have been avoided. Take it for what its worth. It's your car.


FYI - I just learned yesterday from a Sr Ford Technician that air bags are very sensitive to resistance changes. The wiring requires a crimp only process that involves a special crimp. Standard crimps or solder will change resistance enough to cause problems in the system. So beware. The only acceptable solder for use on that system is true aviation solder that is comprised of silver or preferably the special crimps.

Good to know. Appreciate it. I just got my airbag recalled few days ago. I won't be doing anything with those wires then.

I agree. And I've torn apart plenty of electrical tape off my car harnesses inside and out. No solder joints.

What exactly is the parallel splice? Where you point the end of the wires the same direction?

So I see it's a crimp style similar to a butt connector. Thanks for sharing. I think I need to order some of those. Seems better than the butt connectors
