Most of you know, my 4.0L to 5.4L swap hasn't gone smoothly. In fact, most of my recent problems have been in regards to my engine. After the 3rd failure, I chose to have a builder other than MMR tear down the long block to see what in the world was going on. By this point, I had eliminated any other factors outside of my control (eg: tune). The results of the teardown were a bit eye-opening. I really wasn't sure what to do.

At that point, with the money I had invested in the engine, I decided to write MMR a letter. I was upset, but I didn't know who to be upset with. Was it intentional, a pure accident, or just bad luck? I have to admit, based on the hit or miss nature of how people talk about MMR's service, I really didn't know. Most people either love them or hate them and it's not always apparent why. So what I'd like to do is clear the air over what happened with the engine and what MMR is doing about it.

First, both myself and MMR knew there was something "off" with the valves. The owner Mark himself had sent them back for testing after numerous failures. Though MMR knew something was up with the valves, the staff at the time was concerned with getting my engine back quickly, since they had it for so long. It is this need for haste that was probably what doomed the engine to fail again. Though most engines are inspected by Mark or his engine builder Greg before they leave MMR, my engine slipped under the radar and did not have enough "eyes" on it prior to shipping. The result was the third failure, again due to valves.

After talking with Mark about the results of the diagnosis, he decided to go ahead and replace the short block with a warrantied, MMR-built engine. I agree that this was the right thing to do and am very happy MMR is still supporting the build, even with all the hands that have been on the engine. I've decided after, long consideration, to stay with stock heads. While I believe MMR has resolved the problems with the valves, and while the JPC heads are something worth drooling over, I just don't have the money in my budget nor the fortitude to risk another valve dropping into a cylinder. My personal belief is that the heads are an area of the engine that is just not worth playing around with. The HP gain is not worth the risk, IMHO.

So the end result will be an MMR 1000 shortblock, fully warrantied, with stock heads, and twin turbos. I am still looking to net 1000 RWHP, at least on the dyno, as the track will require a built rear end and better tires for the track. As the car's chassis "grows" and I learn to effectively use that power, I will turn up the boost. For now, I am planning on a safe 550-600 RWHP as I break in the turbos, chase leaks, etc...

I think MMR is making a good move here and I applaud their desire to fix this. I would say at this point, both sides have lost money. Mark's decision to fix this will help me get over the heartache (and backache) of R&R'ing the engine 3 times now. It will also help improve MMR's image with the community, which I think is important for any vendor with an Internet presence. I could sit here and curse the past, but in truth, I've learned so much about projects, and planning, and how to approach special builds, not to mention engine building in general. If it wasn't for all I'd been through, I wouldn't have been able to sit down with Mark and spec out how he was going to build the engine.

I have to admit I was really upset about this whole thing and I didn't always handle things the right way. I have learned a LOT. Still, I am glad I pursued this with a cool head. I have received a TON off good advice from the community, especially Todd (Rygen), and I am thankful. Without the support of the "collective" knowledge on the forums, I would probably have handled this differently, or not handled it at all... without giving MMR the chance to make it right.

3 engine failures all related to MMR would mean Greg and Mark would be next to Jimmy Hoffa somewhere out there in no-man's land...........period.

Glad you have more patience than I.

Hahaha, it'd be easy to feel that way... but to be honest, Mark was at his best in regards to effor this time. He genuinely seemed concerned about the chain of events leading to today. I get the feeling things were pretty hectic during the time of the 3rd rebuild. My point of posting this was to update everyone. I get a lot of questions about what happened, so this is for anyone out there working with any vendor.

Depending on who you talk to, some might assume <insert vendor here> wouldn't take steps to fix a problem. It's happened with just about every shop at one time or another. I could've just let it drop, but not only would I not be taken care of, MMR wouldn't have had the chance to make things right. It's when these places stop trying that I get concerned. So far, MMR is still trying and that's a good thing. I could've contacted them earlier, but after the 3rd failure I wanted to know what was really going on with the heads/engine before I did anything else.

So here's hoping this turns the page on the whole fiasco. Credit goes where credit is due. Right now, MMR is doing all the right things. We'll know in a few weeks if it all works out. My gut tells me it will this time. Of course, I'm ever the eternal optimist. :)

I hope all goes well for you and your build. Definitely seems like you paid your dues so it "should". Good luck and thanks for posting!

No doubt. Looking back, I wish I had picked up a stock engine earlier. Even if this thing dynos 1000+ RWHP and blows me away at the track, I plan on hanging onto my current engine. You never know what's going to happen...

+ a rep point for MMR, by the way i've only been here since 2010 , How come they are not on s197 as a vendor did something happen in the past, besides the horrific stories of engine disasters I searched on?

It really depends on who you talk to. Before I talked to Mark, I was prepared for the worst. I did my research... read past issues on forums, read everything I could on BBB site and related sites. The theme I kept seeing was what I would call 50/50. It seemed 50% of the time, the customer was pissed. The other 50% of the time, the customer was happy and praising MMR. When it came right down to it, I realized they couldn't fix a thing unless they knew exactly why I was pissed and what they could do to make it better. In the end, it was a compromise that did the trick, but it took both Mark and I getting a little pissed off to make it work. What matters is that it did work. We both agreed we could've done things differently and I feel we both walked away a little more capable at handling this kind of stuff in the future. Despite what anyone says, MMR does blaze a lot of trails in regards to coming out with stuff first... at least in a mass-market scale. That kind of work has risk, as they saw with their 3v heads. It kind of sucks, but that is the business. For me, this is just an affirmation that you can't expect a company to do perfect all the time, but that it's how they handle things when they go wrong that counts. Up until last week, MMR hadn't done what I felt they should do. Now they are. I'm happy with the outcome and will be even happier when I can throw some serious power at the car. I know they are capable of making badass engines, as their shop cars are definitely fast. Looking forward to seeing what they can do when they put their mind to it.

glad to hear your getting it taken care of. Its sad because their prices seem good, but their rep scares me. I couldn't pay to get my blk changed three times.

Sorry if you have explained this in depth many times before but this is my first time reading about your situation and from what I can ascertain you have 3 failures to date, with the 3rd due to a valve plunging into the cylinder, right? So my question is, were the first two failures a result of the heads, more specifically valve problems? Were the first two failures also MMR related? Did they rebuild after each failure and did MMR cover the cost of the first two failures as well?

Sorry for all the questions but I want to get the entire story here...

Glad to hear they are helping you on the next rebuild but there comes a time when you have to cut your losses.

Isnt the title of this thread an oxymoron? lol

I'm sorry for the BS you went through and dont take this as an personal attack.. but many people like me didnt want to learn allot about this stuff.. We paid to get something and should not have to deal with their BS. I didnt have the skill to to do everything my self.. the time, money and tons of stress to do all that(much less 3 times) is crazy. MMR is giving you a new block, but look what it took to get it.

Yes, all shops have issues but MMR goes beyond that. Not even talking about build issues, people like me and below paid for items and were given used parts on purpose. I paid $$ for a new alum block and got a used one. They did nothing but lie to me and did nothing when they were caught. I basically had to spend $ 1K for a new block because I could not bore it out anymore. How many others have used parts and dont even know it. How many others had issues with them blowing them off..

Sure I learned allot because I was getting F'ed over.. not worth it to me imo. I wish you luck but to me MMR should have been out of Business long ago.... Fuck MMR..

( MODS please open the MMR thread.. let these people see MMR VS S197)

Isn't the horrific stories enough?

Its ok.. he is getting a new engine... and maybe they might throw in a MMR sticker

I hear what everyone is saying. Yes, look what I had to go through. It really, really fucking sucked. I lost a lot of money, and now MMR has as well. I've had many complaints witht them over the years, somewhat because of the sheer amount of stuff I bought from them. Most things were handled... sometimes cheaply, sometimes free of cost.

Here is the whole story, which is just a summary of things I've posted before...

When I decided to build up a 3v 5.4L and stick it in my car, I didn't have a lot to pull from. It hadn't been done (on the internet at least), so I leaned on MMR, who seemed to know a lot about the mod motors, to provide parts, help and advice. No one made a 3v 5.4L intake manifold either, so I chose to go with them.

I'd already procured a long block and wanted it built locally, since I knew a shit-hot engine builder who used to be a Ford technician. He absolutely knew how to build a high HP Ford motor and had plenty of good references.

I still needed the parts, and good recommendations on what would be needed to support 1000 rwhp. So I leaned pretty heavy on MMR.

While waiting for my intake, I ordered from them Manley coated pistons and rods, race bearings, ARP fasteners, basically everything I'd need. The parts were well priced, arrived quickly, and were exactly what I ordered.

So everything went to the builder who assembled the block within 2 weeks.

Wanting the best engine possible, I decided to get stage 3 heads and cams. I'd talked with Livernois, but their prices were really high compared to MMR. MMR said their heads flowed better than Livernois' and that they'd provide the flow testing to prove it. I sent my heads off for them to be reworked.

Several hundred dollars later, I had them back. I had to pay extra because they said the parts of the heads they would reuse were highly worn. I thought it was a complete rebuild, so I was surprised and annoyed. Still, I paid it. I was getting behind schedule and didn't want to dick around with "he said, she said".

I get the heads back, give them to the builder, and he finished the block. It was beautiful.

I still had to wait on the intake, however. I waited and waited and waited. Before it shipped, I received a call from Chris saying the machinist didn't have template for the GT500 TB and that he'd charged them another $200 for the work, which they passed onto me (I was upset because I was told that I could choose the TB flange and it was included in the "custom intake" charge. Also, I told Chris I would be using a GT alternator, which I later found out would not work. It wasn't fair, but again, I just wanted it done.

Finally, when I got it (along with fuel rails), I realized a lot of things were wrong. First, the fuel rails had no provision for the FP sensor. Second, there was no way to hook up the coolant lines (Chris had previously stated the lines/fittings would be included). after weeks of waiting, I ended up just getting them myself. Unfortunately, there was really no way to get the fittings to work there simply wasn't enough clearance for the main coolant inlet/outlet as well as the heater core connections. I ended up taking it to the beat aluminum welder in town. Several hundred dollars later, I had fittings welded directly to it, which took care of the clearance issue. Finally, the GT alternator wouldn't fit. Mark told me to use a Cobra alternator. He offered to send me one, as I couldn't return the GT one I already bought, but he never did. The Cobra alt didn't work because it was not PCM-controlled. Through hours of research, I learned the non-police Crown Vic had the alternator I needed. I still had to modify it (rotate the housing) and adapt my harness to use the D-shaped plug. After rotating the body, the alternator was never reliable. I went through 4 alternator's before eventually switching to the JPC intake...

So with all that done, I was finally able to tune the car. I was new to tuning, but had good mentors. Even when I got everything where it needed to be, the car would still go into limp mode with anything more than 20% or so throttle. The codes were ambiguous, and not a single tuner could figure it out, even when using the GT500 TB-specific settings. I still had to pay them for their time.

I think it was Jim at TurboHP that suggested I manually move the TB flappers. That is when I realized the old flange was cut off and the new GT500 TB flange was simply slapped on there. The inside wasn't opened up to accommodate the larger TB flappers and was actually hitting the inside of the intake, which was tripping the wrench light. MMR fixed it, but I felt it was a really stupid mistake. Another thing they had to fix was the flanges. They were not true, so would not seal to the heads for anything... still, all was fixed by MMR. It was just really irritating. I had the first Spyder intake. I'm sure they have all the "bugs" worked out by now (pun intended).

Moving right along....

So within a couple hundred miles, an exhaust valve (cylinder 3) broke out of the guide and fell into the cylinder... putting a giant hole in it in the process. I called MMR and talked to Chris. Since it was the first failure, many things were questioned. Still, they took care of the rebuild. It lasted another 1000 miles or so when the exact same valve dropped, which destroyed both cylinders 3 and 7. Again, MMR said they would repair it at no charge (even though they didn't build the short block). This time, however, they had my engine a total of 8 months. According to Mark, it was due to several reasons (Chris no longer working there, trying to test the valves to find out why they (and others like it) were failing, etc.... the determination was that the valves were failing because they were overhardened by SI and very brittle. It made sense to me, and I was starting to believe this would be it.

So, to my surprise and ire, the engine failed again. This time, it was only a stuck valve, which presented the opportunity to see how the engine had been built without chunks of metal and carnage strewn about. I sent the engine to Rich Groh for a teardown and diagnosis. They found culmutive damage from the multiple failures.

That is when I called Mark and let him know how pissed and disappointed I was. The rest of the story is in the first post. Now you have the whole story.

Like I said, I feel like MMR is trying to repair the damage of all that's happened over the past few gears. I am willing to give them another chance. Not saying others need to.... but maybe it's just best to sit back and see his Mark treats me from here on out. I am optimistic...

I hear and deal with stuff like this all the time.

1. Communication is a two way street. I can tell a customer exactly what he needs or a status up date and it's no where near what I told him the next dang day or even later that day. Looks like there was poor communication all over your build.
2. If I've said this once, I've said it a thousand times, deal only with one shop for a build. If something goes wrong, there is only one entity to blame..........besides yourself if it may be.
We get so many dang hodge podge builds in with guys using the internet to build from with "tech advice" from guys that have never done a dang thing.
3. Tuning your own car with an 05 up computer.........big balls or something else to be your first tuning experience. Or is this with a FAST or something like it? If you're using SCT, Racer Package, how did you get access to the FBW for the throttle?

Good luck with your project! It should be a beast!
