I have done a lot of research on header installs and have a very specific question. I need to know if anyone is using the BMR K with 1/2 motor mount drop. If so, have you had any header fitment issues? I am currently looking at Kooks, Pypes, and American Racing headers.

This thread could become very useful.

My only feedback is on a GT500. 1/2" lowering BMR K-Member and Kooks LT's; I have received several comments about there being a clearance issue with the Steering Shaft.

Kelly,

Is there a different deck height with the 5.4 vs. 4.6? Also, if there was a clearance issue, what was done to resolve it?

I would be careful about Mac LT's. With my stock K member and with my BMR with stock height mounts, the headers sit about 1/4" from the A-Arm's. I think if the motor was barely lower it would touch.

Correct. A 5.4 4V has a different deck height.

As for resolving it, I will assume they either raised the engine back up by a minor amount with washers....or dented the primaries.

I don't have the 1/2" drop version, but I'll add this just for the purpose of data collection:

BMR K, stock height, Pypes longtube headers (Kooks clones), no issues.

How tight is your hood clearance?

You can insert a washer between the Stainless Cap and the Bushing like this:

You just have to ensure the main bolt is long enough. This is a simple fix sometimes.

I have plenty of clearance. What size washer is that? I might give that a try. The main bolt should be long enough shouldn't it?

ARH and clearance is fine. Issue I have is Moroso oil pan was too close to steering rack, so raised the engine up a little to clear it.

Thanks for all the input! It's great to know this BEFORE I buy and try to fit the headers.

I have a cat-back 3" Flowmaster American Thunder. The Kooks/Pypes are really a mid-length header vs. American Racing, which I believe is a true long-tube. Since I do not want to replace the Flowmaster X, I will probably need to use Kooks or Pypes and splice in an high-flow cat. Below are two pics...the first is where I spliced in the Flowmaster X and the second is one of Kooks w/Cat. Anyone with this same issue of saving your existing X/H while adding headers/Cats? (am I hijacking my own post with another issue?)

I have the same concern about keeping my X. Are the kooks/pypes/mac that much shorter to make a difference?

If you look at the attached pics in my prior post, you'll note that the Kook/Pypes collector flange is about where the stock cat ends. So, I assume I would need a short flange/female ball pipe with a ~45* bend to go parallel to the frame rail, then splice in the cat.

The ARH header is a true long tube where the collector is parallel with the car/ground...I would guess at least 6-10" longer.

Anyone have pics of ARH headers installed?

I got the Pypes O/R X with my headers. It came with those two legs you are describing. If I remember correctly, the catted X comes with the cats, and you then have to cut the legs to fit.

Contact Pype and ask about your needs. I spoke to them at Mustang Week, and they seemed very keen to provide good service.

Not sure if this angle will help:
