They cost a pretty penny now, too. Once this outside contractor took over personalized plates in Texas the cost went up twofold.

I'm talking about the cheapest ones. The highest level where you can mix 7 numbers/letters is just absurd (1000% increase for a year). The level below that is a 500% increase compared to before.
But hey, they do give you a discount if you purchase it under a 5- or 10-year deal.

I don't know why the state decided to do it (well I know it's all in the name of "saving money", but still).
