I'm dumping the MT-82 in a couple months cause I got a deal on an auto. Can somebody give me specifics of what needs to be done to make the auto ecu work in my car. I pm'd racerat and was told I'll have to have the IDS hooked to the car, but what exactly is the IDS doing to make the ecu accept the car? I know I need an engine/trans harness, so will any auto ecu work with this new harness or will the pin out be different leaving me with only certain ecu's to work with? Does it matter if I get a used ecu or should I get new? I know this swap hasn't been done much with the copperhead so hearing from the 3V guys may also be helpful.

Are you going to return the car to stock before the swap? If not this might be tricky since Ford will have to reprogram PATS to get the car running with the new ECU, and your calibration strategy will change with the new ECU as well so you will need a new tune.

For all the hassle involved, it might be easier to just trade it in for a car that came with an auto. I know that's probably not what you want to hear, but it's so expensive to pull off that this is the most reasonable solution.

Trading the car isn't an option. I'll swap in my 6060 before trading it. This is already in motion so no turning back now. I have the trans, shifter, cooler, lines, crossmember, converter, and driveshaft coming next week. I've already got the prices for the computer, wiring harness, flexplate, and interior pieces and those will be ordered once I have the transmission in my possession. Yes it's expensive, but I have my MT-82 w/RXT clutch and a freshly rebuilt 6060 to sell to make up for the cost of this. When you consider that the auto is a $1000 option my feelings aren't hurt about doing this.

I would just like to understand how to get the ECU to work in the car. Mainly how and why it needs to be done. Why couldn't I just get a used computer and turn off pats in the tune and start the car? Or can I?

I think someone is coming out with a stand alone transmission controller for the 6R80 soon. Then I think you could just use the stock computer. It may be bauman coming out with it, I forget.

I might have my stock flexplate to send along with, I'll let you know if I find it.

I think the programming part comes into a problem when you put in your VIN in IDS it is going to see it as a manual car and try to flash it as such. You might be able to get the VIN from an auto car and try to force the flash that way.

It's been done before, just gotta figure out how. Some independent shops might have an IDS setup, not just Ford dealers, they might be of some help as well. Lund/Ken tune Racerat's setup so might want to get with them for info as well.

This is an option, but not sure when they are going to release it. It would be nice if this came out very soon.

This makes alot of sense to me. I'm not sure if anybody has an IDS around here expect the dealership. This is why I'd like to understand what's going on here cause I'd hate to take it to the dealership and they tell me the car won't run and it never will, but still hand me a bill for their troubles. I'd be pretty pissed!

If you find and send your stock flexplate that would be really awesome, but don't tear your garage down trying to find it. It's not that expensive.

That flexplate is sitting right here so it'll get sent along with the rest.

There are several harnesses that need to be swapped, basically all the wiring forward of the firewall ( there are parts of the transmission sub harnesses that tie into mundane things like the headlights and wipers). Both the PCM and ABS modules need to be swapped and then programmed with "as built" data via an IDS tool.

If you end up needing the ABS module let me know and I'll pull it and get it to you, I won't be needing it anymore. On the harness parts though still not feeling real ambitious to pull the entire harness to separate out the required sections, have you figured out anything about that?

I already got the info on the wiring harness and I'm good to go there. It's actually pretty cheap. The abs module I may need if your not gonna use it since your offering. That was also something racerat had to change.

Cool, let me check and make sure that if my car see's that module missing it just disables abs/trac-control and throws some dash lights and doesn't try to go limp mode or anything, and if possible remove abs/trac-control from the tune. If that all checks out I'll pull it and send it as I won't be needing it.

edit....looks like it can go so I'll try to get it pulled soon

Finally got this project done. It's not as bad as many think. This past Saturday I got the mechanical stuff done and then on Weds. I had a Ford tech come by with an IDS to program the ECU. He couldn't figure out how to program the ECU so we gave up. Not gonna lie, I was getting kinda worried. I had him come by again today after I found out some important trans info was needed and after that was put in the PCM car fired right up. When I get some time I'll post up all the parts needed for the swap and what's needed to program the PCM.

Thanks. I'll get a Circle D converter and the Exedy clutch packs maybe next year and cage the car. As for right now I'm done with it except for maybe a couple suspension parts. I'll just run it at the local track until they kick me off. So far the best it's been is 11.6@128 spinning badly in 1st and 2nd gear with 26" QTP's.
