Only advantages of Nitrogen:

1. less likely to migrate through the tire than oxygen: provides more stable air pressure, advantage for racing applications
2. less moisture: corrosion and once again more stable air pressure
3. is not affected by temp change as much as oxygen: once again provides more stable air pressure for racing applications

Me personally, I wouldn't bother on a street driven vehicle.

Update: I had the dealership mechanic pull off all the weights, knock the tires off the rims, inspect everything, line up the yellow dots with the valvestems, and road-force balance them.

Perfect. I had to go to the VA building in Philly and spent an hour between 55 and 80 mph (keeping up with the flow of traffic). Everything was smooth and I am very happy. I am sure that the road-force was the fix.

Sadly, it seems like not only did my mechanic never even hear about the yellow dots or the red dots, but neither did any of the 5 other mechanics that were there. My son-in-law is a mechanic at another dealership and he said the same thing. I just feel that if the yellow dots reduce the amount of weights, then why aren't they doing that?

Honestly, the red dots (harmonic balance point) are still a mystery as nobody has been able to answer my original question about them; if the "4" on the back lip of the wheel is "the" spot to line up or is there another spot? I saw the dot on my parents' steel wheel, but have nothing to go on for aluminum.

Either way, thanks for the input.

You do know the atmosphere isnt 100% oxygen. Its mostly nitrogen so people are literally buying what they breath only slightly more concentrated. But all a compressor needs is a good water trap and it'll be fine

I use helium! Its lighter so it gives you faster acceleration!! Plus if you need to deflate your tires at the track you can make funny voices! :boobies:

That, and oxygen is the gas that escapes through the sidewall, thus leaving an even higher concentration of nitrogen. Just saying.

While the wheel is on the balancer, find something straight that can stand on its own. Check the wheels for being straight by spinning it near that item, and if the wheel isn't true, it will become evident.

Very few people know what the dots mean on a tire both in and out of the car industry. I've noticed it's usually people that work at a place that specializes in tires, i.e. Tire discounter, tire rack, big O. It's still not really even common knowledge amongst those places either.

I'm just an enthusiast and I've known that for years. What shocks me is how many people sell and install tires for a living and don't know it. Nobody has to be good at what they do, they just have to show up and pretend like they know.

So I called it on post #5.

When I mounted tires I always lined up the dot, and always rotated the tire if the weight the machine wanted was high. I guess most are just lazy and don't want to take the extra time or effort to do it right.

I just got some new rims and tires done. My installer said the dot indicates the lightest part of the tire and should always go inline with the valve-stem. Ive never had any vibes on any sets he's mounted
