So I've got an 05 3v. Getting the car ready for a turbo, and I'm currently on the subject of the oil pump. First off, do I need the TSS gears, the 2013 GT500 pump assembly, or both? Also, I have yet to find a writeup on the change for the 3v. Is it very difficult to do without pulling the engine? Right now I'm looking at 450rwhp until I build the motor and drivetrain, then my goal is somewhere between 700-750.

Lookup a member named Scott, he did an excellent write up on this, it should be in DIY. Do both and just pull the timing cover to change the pump.

Do you have to pull the entire accessory set from the engine to get the timing cover off? What about the oil pan?

edit: found a guide for the timing cover

IIRC the only difference is the spring rate for the pressure valve. there's a lot of info on the site about them.

Do both, you want the steel back plate of the GT500 pump.

You have to tear it down to this level, the only real trick is leaving the pump mounting bolts loose when your screwing in the pickup tube bolts, you need the wiggle room to get the inside pickup bolt in. I used the stiffer spring that came with the GT500 pump, have not had any problems, others replace it with the stock spring.

Mine is a '11 but I didn't pull the engine to do mine. The pickup bolts can be fun to get started but not bad.

Do a search on SVT oil pump. Iirc Scott did a build thread on it a while back but I could be wrong. I'm pretty sure Bruce and one of the guys down in Florida did one as well.

I have an NA 3V and I put the GT500 pump in with stock 3V pressure spring. I didn't use the TSS gears because my car is NA. I just wanted the steel plate and a new oil pump while I had the car ripped up.

Does anybody know for sure if using the gt500 Spring is the right thing to do? I only ask since the tensioners and phasers work off oil pressure and I would want to make sure they work properly.

According to FRPP it won't hurt anything. I kinda wish I had left it in, but I'm sure it would be bothering me if I had lol. The only reason I regret swapping is because there is no torque spec for the spring retainer plug.

I don't know if it's the right thing to do, but I did it.

My engine was built with some pretty loose tolerances and I run a heavier weight oil because of it.

I figured it was better to have a higher rating on the oil pump bypass spring to ensure flow would be maintained instead of the pump bypass returning oil into the pump.

Been using the higher pressure gt500 pump spring for 4 years. And I still use vct.

You should. If you are f.i. on a 3v, upgrading your stock oil pump is a great insurance policy to buy into.

depends on the type of FI, belt driven are more at risk, PD at greater risk IMO.
