I am a little confused about overdrive on or off.Have been a lot of reading on the web about this.I know when its off you have no 5th gear.In my case its 90% city driving.Have been reading on the web from a transmission shop about the 5r55s.They say that the overdrive is working on 2th and 5th gear.So is it better for the transmission for less tear and wear to drive in the city with overdrive off?? 100% stock 2006GT...

Shouldn't make a difference either way I would think. I don't ever engage my OD until at least 65-70 mph, and that is only after I have settled into a lane and in cruise mod.

Welcome!

Overdrive IS fifth gear. Toggling the O/D off button just keeps it from shifting into 5th or downshifts to 4th if you are already in 5th

Correct. The way both ford + roush do it is... it will go into OD around town at 30 mph @ 1 k rpm. Just shut the od off around town. With my VMP tune, it won't go into OD (5th) unless it's at least 40 mph.

With my M90 blower...and ur foot into it just a little bit while in OD..then shutting off the OD results in a hard downshift into 4th gear. Take ur foot off the gas for a split second while shutting off the OD..then u get a gentle downshift from 5th to 4th.

If you know u will be doing some spirited driving, or light to light stuff, or passing on the hwy, 1st shut off the OD. Shut any traction control off as well, it just trashes the rear brakes. With the 5r55 you want to avoid any 5-3 shifts, 5-2 shifts, 4-2 shifts. 2-1, 3-2 and 4-3 are fine.

What he is talking about is the way our 5R55Synchronus tranny works. 1st and 2nd gear work like a conventional slushbox but then it gets complicated. 3rd, 4th and 5th gear use a combination of the gear bands/clutches together at the same time. So after getting into 3rd, multiple 'gears' are being used.

Understood. But does the overdrive button actually change what clutches or bands are engaged for 3rd and 4th? Or does it only restrict 5th? I have a tr3650 so i'm just curious.

It only restricts it from going into 5th. All other operations are the same.
