I have never had to data log before and tried to do some today with no luck.

Using LiveLink 6.5 and a X3

Does the engine have to be running for Livelink 6.5 to have the green "start data logging" button to be active?

when trying to load a config file, I get a status message of "opening config file" but then none of the parameters seem to load.

the X3 device itself, do you have to do anything other than plug it into the OBD II and the laptop?

I read a few how to's and watched a couple vids and it seems that it should be a simple thing to load a config file and that the SCT device should automatically initialize, but neither of those things worked for me.... :yuno: work SCT!

When I tuned for Lito i was able to open the config file before the car was on, it would just pop up a message saying it wasnt sure if all the parameters were available to log or something, been a few months not 100% on that

Didnt have to do anythong to SCT device other than plug in

Was able to turn key to on, it would be ready, hit record then start car. As long as the car didnt stay off for X seconds it would continue recording, that would give you a record that would show actual startup and on.

I have livelink gen II v2.5.2 with a X3 and use the "guide me" function in the upper left corner of the window to get it going.

I data logged the fuel rail pressure with the key on engine off the other day, just needed the key on to start communications.

I tried using a config file once but it didn't work. I just manually select what I want to log.

key needs to be on for datalogging,or started.
The x3 should say something like passthrough detected.

hmm, I didn't think the Gen II worked with the older X3s

I always plug the x3 in then turn the key on.
plug the laptop into the handheld.
open the livelink program.
open config file.
it should ask you if you want to connect to the cars ecu for verification.

If at anytime there is a loss of power or signal disruption to the laptop the whole thing just doesn't work right.
And I unplug everything and start over.

the car does not have to be running to enable the green button.
but if you haven't started it in 10 sec it all goes to shit and then I have to unplug it all and start over again.

I'm using livelink gen II v2.4.7 with an older X3, and I'm able to load a config file without issue. Have you updated the device firmware?

http://www.sctflash.com/showdeviceupdates.php?PNID=3000&RVCODE=XP

good luck
Yea, mine is older and the last SCT update was a while back, I have the most current firmware.

open the livelink program.
open config file.

And I unplug everything and start over.

It did ask to verify and it failed. I manually entered the code. Tried from scratch a few times without luck.

I'm going to try again using Gen II

Well I think I found the root issue. Seems that Win 8 and SCT don't work well as far as the drivers go. I'm not getting any communication between the X3 and the laptop. Tried to manually update the drivers and it didn't work.

And u had no issues with device drivers? Which x3, I think there are two versions of the device?

I had to do something with the drivers too. Using Livelink gen2 with Windows 8.

It's been awhile since I've done any logging. What Hamish wrote is pretty close to how I do it. First the sct is plugged in and key turned on. I usually have the computer up and connected to the x3 but don't open livelink until the after the key is on and the sct is plugged into the car.

I have an X3 and windows 10. Laptop had windows 8.1 previously which may have helped the driver situation. Was an upgrade.

I've had some flaky annoying behavior with the laptop occasionally not picking up the SCT and it shows up in a problem state in device manager. Often times just unplugging/plugging it back in solves that.

Anyhow I normally plug the SCT into the car then boot the laptop. Plug the SCT into the laptop. Key the car in the on position. Open up livelink and then run the communication test. If it passes I open the configuration file and it is ready to go. Start the car and hit the green button.

Interesting that you didn't have issues, it's seems a common thing for Win 8.1

I start the software first and it guides me step by step what to do.

Here is what I do...

Start software, then get step by step prompts

connect device
start engine
establish communications
select data to log
start log

Using a Dell XPS12
