If so, then I've been lucky. I haven't run anything lighter than 10w-40 for the past 3 years (and even ran 20w-50 for about 1-1/2 years).

i was using 5w20 so i doubt its the oil

10w-30 has been good for me and if you have your VCT locked out I think its a good idea.

Ok well here is my next question. Do you think the heavier oil could be acting as a damper for the gears? We would have to find out what oil everyone is running that had a failure and see. I may be stepping up to a 10W30 for the next change and will beat the hell out of it as usual and see what happens. I turn my motor to 6800 - 7000 rpm pretty often and I am wondering if mine will be on borrowed time.

Well I'm not so surprised to see the oil pump pics. The question is what are your plans now?

bearings look like normal wear to me. Can't hurt to polish the crank and slap in some new ones. Can't believe that pump! At least you have the GT500 one coming now.:thumb:

Alright what is the deal here, people are failing with the stock pumps and are holding tight with the GT500 ones. Ron even had a IW dampener on and they are one of the best. I think it looks like normal wear and tear. I wouldnt event send it out. I think you are lucky in this situation, which I hope I am. I guess we will both be switching to a GT 500 pump.

Im also getting a Oil pressure gauge with a kill switch when it drops below 15psi. That way it has some insurance, not a guarantee. A lot of the LS guys use this.

how are you gonig to acomplish the kill switch. Id like to do this for both the oil pressure as well as the eH2O pump

+1. That video you linked sounds just like a dry pump with the gears over-running.
...an oil pump failure...
...that pump...!
...failed oil pump...

Well shit....here we go. Ron hasn't turned one single bolt and the whole world is looking for billet gears. How about we let him get it torn down first.

Hey SD ==>>>> :asskiss3:

I still want to know why they're breaking. What do you think, Engineer-boy?
From 1000 feet - seems like you have about 3 options (maybe 4?):

1. Hydraulics
2. Harmonics
3. Metallurgical failure and/or incorrect computation on Fords part of the loads seen in the pump.
4. All of the above?

Here's a totally unsubstantiated, perhaps way off base, data-free, random Wild-Ass-Guess:

Wondering if perhaps its just a dumb random act of timing to get it just right and have either harmonics or engine configuration in a split second create a hydraulic lockup (potentially highly localized) between a lobe or lobes of the pump, the outer ring and the outbound oil path?

Get enough pressure/distortion in the right place and POW - that outer ring shatters like glass either for lack of anywhere else for the oil to go, vibration or both... After that, everything follows...

BTW - anyone confirm or deny that they were above 6250RPM when these happened?

The correct answer is #2. It is the root cause of these harmonics that I am looking for.
Well, there's 2 long ass chains, balance of who-knows-what-phasers, and a squishy Al block (speaking of which - are there any Fe block OP failures?)

Rod/piston configurations seem pretty varied...

There's the MMR thing which is basically a stock pump with a better seal - bringing up the hydraulic question again...

I dunno... I stumped and a little scared, but then I'm also still sitting in the garage for many reasons not related to oil pressure... :thud:

Well, I have an iron block, a GT500 pump, and a stock crank pulley. If my oil pump takes a shit, you can add that combination to the list.
