Hello Brian,

Thanks for getting back in touch with us! We are making good progress with 6R80, and I'm very excited about where it's going. I'm working to simplify the tuning process, and that is where much of my time is being spent. At the moment, I have a 6R80 in a push-rod 5.0L SN95 Mustang as my test mule. As you know, those cars are normally slugs with the AODE, but the 6R80 has actually made it fun to drive, even though it is still underpowered, and with wife-approved shift quality. By far, the hardest part has actually been attaining good light-throttle shift quality, and WOT operation is not much of a challenge.

With a project like this, it's always better to start slow and work your way up to higher-powered combos, which we intend to do in a month or so. We are lining up beta testers now, with a 500-600HP car, and a 1000HP car in the works. With that being said, I anticipate no limitations on the power levels on our end, with the power handling being set by the physical limits of the transmission. People are still exploring what this transmission can handle, but as you say, it appears to be capable of about 1000 HP in stock trim, and possibly up to 1500 or so as appropriate aftermarket parts become available. It's too early to tell, but the 6R80 may give the 4L80E some serious competition in the power handling arena.

I have not yet heard the 450HP rumor, but I can tell you that it did not come from us, and I appreciate you bringing it to our attention. When completed, our controller should be capable of anything that the OEM ECU can do, and hopefully more. I believe that PA is rating the PCS controller that they sell at a maximum of 650HP, so it is possible that this news got contorted as it traveled though the ether.

We will continue to post updates to our web site and news letter as things progress. If you have any questions, just let us know.

Have a good evening!

Good news, will the Baumann support paddle shifting ??

As for the PA 450hp claim, PA has that posted on their 6R controller webpage.

""Performance Automatic of Frederick Maryland is excited to present its new Ford 6 Speed Coyote Street Smart Transmission Packages with the “6600” Stand Alone Transmission Controller. We will be using the Ford 6R80 6 speed automatic transmission, the same units you will see in the latest Mustangs. This controller and harness package is designed to function with a 2011-14 6R80 transmission behind a Ford Coyote engine of 450 max horsepower using the Ford control packs, M-6017-A504V (2011-14) or M-6017-A504Va (replaces pack A504V).

Performance Automatic has created a sophisticated Ford 6R80 6 Speed Street Smart System to partner with this new engine. So how is the controller a limiting factor in how much power the trans can take?

Is this some factor of not being able to get drivability with higher line pressure? sounds like a side effect of trying to be first to market. The problem being if you are selling a 6r80 that can only handle 450hp what exactly is the point of being first to market?

The controller must control individual gear line pressure. That has been a tough expensive nut to crack. I don't think PA will see much demand for their product.

+1 is what I like about the 4r. Nevertheless, 6r would freaking awesome!

Has anyone upgraded to the new shiftware and are using it?

Does anyone have any updates on this yet or is anyone using one of these controllers? I don't see anything new on their website.

I haven't heard anything yet so I'm not sure if they are going to use me for beta testing. He thought July might be the month for that. If it keeps getting pushed back I may go a different route.
Thanks Mike

I gave up on the 6r80 swap. Dont think its going to happen. 4r70 is going in.

I don't think anyone could blame you. I'm pretty frustrated with the progress of this project.
Will your 4r70 be full auto or manual valve body version?

I talked to them last week and they said they are going to release the unit at SEMA this year and be available for retail sale before the end of the year. Take it for what it's worth. I am working on another way to make the 6r80 work with a 3v, but it will be this winter before I bolt it in the car and test it.

In case any of you want to try it first, the plan is to use a PCM, TCM, and 6r80 from an 06'-10' Explorer or an 09'-10' F150. These units have a TCM on the transmission that controls it.

I am still researching to see if this PCM/TCM will work if added to a newer 6r80 unit though.

Very interesting and clever plan. I see Lito in your sig. What does he think of your plan?

We are working on it.To be honest, most of the work will be on his end. I'm just buying parts and bolting them on. We would really like to make this work without a controller though if possible. All of the tuning will be done on his end though, unlike an aftermarket controller that you can adjust yourself. The aftermarket is just WAY to slow on this and I have not seen anything to make me think these unicorn controllers will happen any faster. It will probably be like everything else I do custom, three months later the aftermarket is there.

Quick update, Baumann has a update on their 6R80 Quick6 controller.

Looks like it'll be shown at SEMA ...

Here's a shot of Quick 6 learning...
We've worked hard to provide the simplest, most effective initial setup for the 6R80.
The "learn" process allows Quick 6 to calibrate itself to your specific transmission using our exclusive technology, and be driving soon after installation is completed.
No guesswork on your part.
More details to come...have a great weekend!
