I recently purchased a new 2018 Mustang GT from a dealer 5 hrs. away from me in Illinois (Fairway Ford). I drive with hand controls so had to have it shipped to me here in MN. It finally arrived here on truck yesterday afternoon. Driver was unloading and started it and immediately I could hear a miss in the motor. Should have made him keep it on the truck..
We unloaded and got it in my driveway. I looked and it had a check engine light. Hooked up my SCT and got 3 error codes

P0300 Random misfire detected
P0301 Cylinder 1 random misfire detected
P0000 Info not available

I contacted the dealership and they told me they had seen the light and changed the battery and the problem was gone. Sounds a little fishy… I asked if they ran any diag on it and had an error code, he could not remember. Should that not have been entered into the service records of the car?

But then he also stated there was a recent service bulletin to reprogram the Power Control Module and they had it in a few days ago to do that. They never mentioned any of this to me when I purchased the car.
I have an 8:00 Monday am apt at my local Ford dealer to have it checked out.

I’m calling Ford first thing Monday AM as well to file a complaint. I’m also going to contact my shipper to see if this light was on when it was picked up at the dealership, which I believe it was.

Started the car a bit ago again and got a huge backfire. Sounds like shit and running on about 4 cylinders.
We have not even driven the car yet!!! This sucks….

Do you still have your old car? Call the selling dealer back and ask him to come pick up the car and make it right, period. Here in Florida it is the law that you have 3 days (I think) to change your mind on a large purchase and get your money back. Not sure if your state has a similar law? But tell him you're not accepting delivery of the vehicle until it is running correctly. Regardless it isn't your job to fix problems on a brand new car.

Yes I do still have my Roush, actually dug that out and went for first ride of the year in that today to try to change my mood and it worked. Car therapy...

Not sure on the lemon law here in MN, but I'm looking into it, as well as calling Ford 1st thing Monday to file a complaint.
I as well don't feel I should have to deal with this, especially for the fact I have not even driven the car yet. I contacted the dealer, they told me to take it to my local dealer as it is under warranty.

Yeah, NO! Call the manager back and say that isn't good enough. The fact that you haven't even driven it yet is proof enough that you are refusing delivery. Tell him that HE can send somebody to take it to the shop and get it fixed.

Besides the fact that it isn't even driveable. Since his employees decided it was ok to deliver a car that wasn't running then he can send the tow truck to haul it off to get fixed. Why in the world should you be footing the bill for fixing his mistakes? Tow trucks aren't free.

Most states don't require a dealer to offer or abide by a "buyers remorse" or some other set number of days or miles return law.

You likely own the car, for better or worse. BUT....the dealer has an interest in making things right. It is bad publicity to tell some to get bent. Any dealer that is worth it's salt will want to make things right.

Balking at a factory directed reprogram of the PCM is not going to go anywhere. It's pretty common. In fact it may have been a part of the pre-purchase/pre-delivery inspection. It may have been the specified service for the check engine light and may have fixed it prior to the car leaving the dealership. But unfortunately it didn't actually fix it if that is why it was reprogrammed.

This is exactly why new cars have warranties. They should either come get and fix it or make arrangements to have it fixed at a dealer closer to you. If the dealer won't "play ball" you can call Ford and file a complaint. It will usually make something happen.

251 miles on it. I asked the dealer that as well, was it a demo? He said no. Claimed miles were from test drives and they have another dealership it may have been driven to.

Wife drove the car to local dealership this am, the problem is getting worse the more the engine runs, was backfiring and missing terribly, she could not drive over 30 mph. Maybe should have let it sit and run for a while at the dealership....

I'm with you on this and the more I've though about it today, I'm not accepting this car. It arrived to me in non working order, not even able to be driven, and I have a hard time believing this happened on the truck on it's way to me. They also admitted to seeing a check engine light previously.
If I could drive it back to them I would, but it would never make it, would definitely have to be transported. IMO they should come and get it and refund my money or provide a replacement. I'm also not paying to ship a car back to them, or one back to me again.

I am going to call them Monday am and give them the option to come get it, which I'm betting they won't do as they already told me to take it to my local dealer.
I am also going to contact Ford to make them aware of the situation. I will discuss replacement with them if dealer does no play out well.

Spoke with my local dealer this am to see if they have looked at the car yet, but they have not had a chance. He looked up the history on the car and found the dealership that sold me the car did not tell me the whole story, actually had a P0316 error code on the car, which is why they flashed the pcm. That error relates to timing, camshaft, and crankshaft.
Shortly after I spoke with a rep from Ford, they say because I accepted the vehicle off the truck it is now mine and they will work with me to repair the vehicle. I told them I will not accept that, and also told her the info I had just received from my local dealer. She then suggested I contact the dealer that sold me that car and see if they will come and get it and take it back or replace it.
So I contacted Fairway Ford and let them know the situation, they do not want to take it back and want to wait to hear what is wrong with the car.

That sucks! When will your local dealer be able to look at it?

This story is a case study of how Ford makes a problem everyone's but theirs. Mechanics quitting, cars being pieces of shit right out of the gate, and it's all finger pointing. Nobody is responsible for the car being garbage.

Toyota would not let this happen. A Japanese man in a suit would be at JJ's house making it all right, with a brand new Supra (Z4 I guess..) and what have you.

I got called a bit ago by local dealer, they had misfires on 4 cylinders, turns out it may be 4 bad spark plugs, new plugs will be here tomorrow and we'll go from there. How the f do 4 plugs go bad at once.... explains why it was running so rough....

Guess I was right about it sounding like it was running on 4 cylinders....

Four plugs don't go bad. They are swinging in the dark.

And Ford pushing back on you is a business decision. They know 90% will not fight back, so it makes sense from a dollars and sense standpoint.

If you lawyer up, they will make it right. You might consider getting a Lemon Law attorney that gets paid only if you do. He will negotiate with their attorneys for a settlement. Likely, the car will be fixed by then, and you will get a check for your trouble.

I had one of the first 2011 5.0s in 2010. And, it had the BBQ ignitor tick. They refused a new engine . . . again, because it makes dollars and sense. Well, I lawyered up. In the end, after lots of hassle, I got a new engine AND $13,500 for my trouble. The lawyer took half and I bought a new hardwood floor for my house ;)

Well I can't believe it but it was actually the 4 plugs, local dealer replaced 4 plugs this am, let it run for a while and no issues, running fine. No codes.
We picked it up a bit ago and wife skated home with it because we just had 6 inches of snow. She said it seems to be running ok, going to be a few days before we'll really be able to really test it. The service manager said last week they pulled a new truck in off the lot that had been there a while and that had a couple bad ones too. Is there a bad batch of plugs out there or something? Never heard of plugs just going bad like that.

A pic of the car...
