The '74-'78 second generation models in the aftermath of the 1973 oil crisis represented a low watermark in Mustang history. Ironically they may soon become collectible.
IMO the '65 Shelby GT350R was probably the most fun for its raw driving experience and lightweight chassis, while the '69 Boss 429 was a badass bruiser. It could have been even more badass if it wasn't choked at 375hp.

True but then a lot of other ugly cars still became collectible. With Gen 1 & Gen 3 Mustangs already appreciating in value, Gen 2 Mustangs can be had at rock bottom prices at the moment but I have a feeling that'll change sooner or later as they approach 50 years of age.
People said the same thing about Camaros of the same vintage and prices for those are steadily increasing.

The only thing any good about the Mustang II is the front suspension. The rest of it is garbage. It's an overgrown Pinto.

And yet, from a sales perspective it was a HUGE success. Second in sales only to the first Mustang year.

That's funny. I guess people just wanted to own the Gen 2 Mustang for its name even if it did suck donkey balls.
I'm surprised a YouTuber hasn't built one yet using a totaled '15-'17 GT as a parts donor.

The Boss 429 was NOT choked at 375 HP. That was the “official” number for insurance purposes.
I read where someone recently rebuilt a 1970 to factory specs and it dyno’d 500+ rwhp lol

I read where someone recently rebuilt a 1970 to factory specs and it dyno’d 500+ rwhp lol

Only choked in the sense that it came saddled with smog equipment and a smallish 735cfm Holley carb. Given a bigger carb, LT headers, and no smog equipment, 500+rwhp does sound plausible.

As for the 74-78 mustang II, not many mid 70's cars out of Detroit were memorable for their looks.

The ugly stick was the most used tool in mid 70's automotive design.

All cars back then were sucky pieces of junk. If you think about it, it was probably one of the better choices out there.

Ford sold 1.1 million of the Mustang II. Ford sold 1.2 million 64.5-66 cars. How many early cars do you see versus the MII's? LOL!!

My first Mustang was 1978 4 cylinder car. My second Mustang was 1977 Cobra II with the powerful 129 horsepower V8. Were they great cars? Absolutely not but they did give me fond memories.

Glad to see my 05 made the list. My first Mustang was a 1979. While better than the previous 74-78 cars, it was a rolling piece of turd. Interior build quality was nonexistent. The 2.8L V-6 ALWAYS needed repair. And after 9 years, it rusted so badly, the drivers seat literally fell through the floor after hitting a pothole.
