Best street/track tires for drag racing?

I actually just picked up a set mounted on 15” race stars I’m really looking forward to trying out. If they perform that much better I may make them my street setup.

Cool, you will notice the difference right away. I use Hoosier QTP's on my RaceStars.

I drive with drag slicks and skinnies to the strip and back. Forgot to take them off one weekend and when I got to work Monday, I saw that were still on the car. And I was inside the Motiva refinery. Lol

I have to have a DOT stamp on my tire to race at my track for Midnight Mayhem so I went with QTP's. But one day I did the same, drove all the way to work wondering my car felt so funny. Bias ply QTP's at 14 psi felt a little squishy on every turn I made.

Interesting how we go back to a tire that is smaller than stock. I have thought maybe I should get a larger than 18 inch wheel to maybe get better traction. I have Michelin Super Sports but I guess that isn't enough. So with the 15's does it give you that much more out of the hole?

Well let's get the terminology right first. The size of the tire is probably going to be larger but yes using a smaller diameter wheel or rim is going to give you much better results out of the hole. It's all about sidewall and contact patch and absorbing the initial hit. With a larger wheel you have less sidewall. This, along with the fact that it's a radial doesn't allow for a lot of flex. The contact patch you have is not going to change much. A taller tire with a bias ply is going to allow that tire to flex which allows it to squat and wrinkle greatly increasing your grip or traction. The squatting action of the tire also acts like a torque multiplier at launch giving you a lower effective gear or higher gear ratio. Then as the speed increases the tire will expand more giving you greater top speed on the big end than a lower profile radial. My race tires are on 15" rims but are 28" tall. I believe stock is around 27". So we're not talking about smaller tires just shorter rims.

Me? My best is 11.6 on the QTPs. Best on MT's was 11.8. Nittos I could just get under 12.

I'm trying to hook up now. My Stang is back in the shop for more suspension goodies and swaps to make it more planted. The upper and lower control arms and whatever's I'm not the Mechanic like most here is but I have faith in my shop and I'm feeling pumped.

Thanks. She runs strong for stock bottom end. Yep. 25% of my winnings went into that car. I averaged about $40/hr playing $1/$2, $1/$3 and $3/$5 No-Limit and it took about 6-7 years. When I was saving for my blower I had a big envelope with thousands in it. When it got up to $8k I emptied it onto the kitchen table to count and organize it for deposit. That was pretty cool.

My only foray into real gambling was when I took my mother to Delta Downs. I put $500 on a horse. Odds were 5 to 1. Darn thing finally came in at a quarter to 2.
