The science is that by making the left and right pipes have different volumes their resonant frequency phases will be different, so will not be additive. Done correctly (which would take some mathematics) you could tune them to be opposite in phase and partially or fully cancel each other’s resonance.

I had the same issue several years ago. Found 2 take-off OEM mufflers for $50 on Craigs list. The sound is good for me. Previously on a 2007 V6, I installed Ford Racing duals. I loved the sound. I was told that Borla manufactured them for Ford.
