Hey guys .
I'm about to install my 410 gears in my full bolt on mutha thumper camed car.
I'm doing this in my garage and I wanted to ask the guys who have done it at home in the garage.
Should I drop the rear out completely or keep it in the car?
I figured dropping it would be easier on the lower back.
But keeping it in the car cuts time...

The question is how much time and is it worth it?

I did my 410's out of the car. It was my first time doing gears so it took a number of tries to get the shimming/pattern right. It would have been a real pita doing it on my back, especially for an old guy like me. I also did the UCA bushing, seals, bearings and painted, so do all that on a bench was much easier too. Definitely worth the effort of getting it out of the car.

I did my 4.10's in the car. But I have a bit of experience. And I'm able to get my car 3 feet off the ground. IIRC, I disconnected some of the suspension and let the axle hang down.

I did it two times, one on a big lift and the other in my garage. The up and down, up and down takes a lot of time and for me it would be impossible to crush the spacer, so I used a solid spacer, which I would recommend anyway.
I hope there will be no next but I would take out the axle now.
On the lift I needed 2 full days on high speed and in my garage 8 evenings (I wanted to be very precise with shimming)

The Trutrak is one of my best mods, was worth the work.

This is much easier on the back and has an unobstructed view. Everything is within reach.

Done it both ways...............best by far is out from under the car period.......especially if gonna change out the pinion bearing races........especially the inner pinion bearing race.

Will never do this w\ this integrated designed SRA still under the vehicle again.................

Now I see your full rig, Midlife Crises! What brand of setup is that cause I want 1 of those..............was wondering how you were going about this........now I see!

thanks for the feedback guys ,
i really do appreciate it !
after reading the reply's im definitely gonna pull it out,
crushing the crush washer is a good reason and, just the ease of doing the work.

i replaced my brake booster with the gt500 one this past weekend,,
let me tell you,, i dunno how i squeezed my 5'9 , 220lbs body frame under the steering wheel to remove the 4 nuts for the brake booster,, but i did ,, (with a knot now in my lower back lol)
so taking from that experience and seeing what you guys told me.,..
yea im gonna puller her ,,
i also have a new bmr bushing for the upper rear anyways and that will make it ten fold easier,, i also have relocation brackets as well ..

any tips on installing the 410's?
im confused how there isnt like a "set shim set" for each gear set,,
like at the factory, id imagine its production line so they wouldn't have someone doing shims in the the rear?
you would think they have a set shim that gets you close enough to spec to "send it" ?

anywho thanks again guys

Having the rear out is just easier to do any work on it but it’s an extra effort for a single person.

Ford has a tool that mocks up the differential center section carrier. That’s the one that I have always used and never had an issue. I have done 3:27, 3:55 and 3:73.

Every differential is different so no exact “shim spec” per gear ratio is not available. Every rear end needs to be set up accordingly, but be forewarned some gears are more prone to whine than others.

Good luck and post some pics.

This is very true. Even with the best tools and years of experience every once in a while you get one of them.

What do you have for tools to set up the gears? Pinion Depth and Backlash?
pretty much what this guy used ,, well i have better tools than basic set ,, but yea i have what i need (dial indicator \ calipers
20 ton press \ marking compound,ect)

guess its a matter of using the number on the top of the pinion and taking measurements and doing some quick math , then checking to make sure all is well with the marking compound . ect

My suggestion is to use the pinion shim that is in there now. I have found the factory shim to be correct or very close to the right one. Easy place to start.

you are correct .,. i think all ford pinions are the same length , give or take a decimal.
so with fords you can,, im not sure about the other company's pinions gear kits tho ..

i did get a ford 410 gear kit and shim kit

Doing this is always a safe option. It should still be checked, however there are very specific tools needed to Properly check pinion depth.
