Hey, just wondering if anyone out there is using the H&R RSS coilovers? And if so, how you like em? and pics?

I just got a new 09 GT, looking to lower it as much as possible. And the HR goes 2.7 front and 2.5 rear, I believe.

That's a hell of a drop... you planning on carving corners or is this more for bling?

Apparently you haven't heard of a 'lower center of gravity'.....2.7" is not a lot when the car sits half a foot of the ground.

And no....its not for bling, I don't think the coilovers come in chrome.

Actually, I have heard of "lower center of gravity," mate... Have YOU heard of "raised roll center?" Or try out "reduced anti-squat % (instant center)." Or even "insufficient suspension travel." And yeah, you CAN get coilovers in chrome.

You can keep the lower CG, but I'll run rings around you with a proper RC and IC. And for a guy with a whopping three posts to his name, you're throwing a LOT of attitude around, at people you know nothing about. Ease off, and you MIGHT learn something.

When you drop the S197 chassis beyond approximately 1", you need to do a LOT of supporting work to reset the chassis angles to actually keep the car capable of handling well. There's a lot more engineering to a proper road-race suspension than just slamming the car. Do a little research, then come back and try again.

Before you continue to demonstrate you apparent lack of knowledge on this forum you should do a little research on the members trying to give you advice. Dave and others on this forum are very experienced corner carvers with the S197 and can offer you very valuable information. :buttkick:

I didn't mean to throw too much attitude into that response (a little harsh). Obviously you know your stuff, about suspension.

I just hate hearing people say you shouldn't lower your car, just because they don't personally like the look.

I'm on the wrong subsection here (road racing and what not), I just thought I'd try here first, cuz there might be a better chance of somebody having coilovers here.

All the other threads I've seen, are guys with 1.5" springs and stock overall diameter wheels.

What I'm planning on doing is goin with 18x9 (255/35/18) and 18x10 (285/35/18) and lowered right down on those.

Anyway, I apologize.......stepping in the wrong territory here!

No worries. Believe it or not, THAT's why I asked if it was functional or cosmetic. Functional has SOOO many drawbacks with that deep of a slam that it's just not worth it. Cosmetic, on the other hand, is a whole different animal. On this sub-forum, we're all into the performance end of the suspension, though, so you might have better luck in one of the other sub-forums, like "Pimpin' it!" or "Chit-chat."

Personally, I have NO problem with the look of a lowered or heavily raked S197. I just know from experience that if you're intending to drive it in anger, that's not the best approach to take. Fwiw, I'm running 255/45 and 285/40 on 18x9.5 wheels, with a 1.25" front and 1.75" rear drop, and could see going lower if it's a cruiser. Trying to throw it into a 45mph corner at 70mph, though, is a whole 'nother story. Just to compensate for the drop I've got now, I've replaced all three rear control arms and the Panhard bar with rod-end adjustables, added relocation brackets, and that's just on the rear, to keep the pinion angle and IC in check. Up front, it's camber/caster plates, bump-steer tie rod ends, and coming soon, extended-stud ball joints. Here's the stance:

Good luck to you, and throw up some pix once you get your ride slammed. Besides the H&R coilovers, be sure to check out the AST, Tein, and Griggs and Ground-Control setups as well. Just more fuel for thought.

When you factor in the dynamics of cornering, you'll see why much more of a drop is counter-productive to what we do:

the tire sizes dave suggested would be nearly perfect, and in fact would be what i would put on a 9 wide front rim and 10 wide rear...and is what comes stock on the gt500 wheels and tires...since ur wheels are staggered it would be a great size to run because the front will fit better on ur 9 inch wide wheel than it actually does on a 9.5, and the 285/40 actually belongs on a 10 wide wheel, but is put on the 9.5 from the gt500 since putting a tire that is a bit wide on a wheel improves take off traction and braking traction. if this is not clear, ask what u dont understand and i will explain later...its bed time now

If your not going to be racing on the open track or Autocross, coil overs are an over kill. Just because they will allow you to lower it up to 2.7 doesnt mean it will work for your set up, the flexibility is used for racers who are constantly changing parts in order to dail in the perfect suspension set up for their car, driving style and race venue.

Lowering an S197 even an inch will throw of suspension geometry a bit but that can be compensated for by Ball joints, Tie Rods, Control arms.... lowering your S197 over 2" will throw things off in a big way and not many manufactureres are making parts intended for such a drastic drop, so finding the correct parts will require more research and money.

As stated Roll Center has to be compensated for when lowering, otherwise youll have the look but not the performance. For show, thats fine on the road its miserable.

Well, one advantage of coilovers will be once you realize how screwed up handling is after you slam it, you can adjust it back up without having to buy new parts and swap everything out..

I guess a lot of people find a lowered mustang offensive.

Not offensive, just not necessary to drop that far. Personally it looks like garbage. But not my car so dont care what you do to yours.
