Hot Rod cams

Alright so I bought some used Hot Rod cams on ebay but now I'm kind of worried I got boned out of $600.

On the box it says XE-XXX, where XXX is some letters and numbers but on the cams themselves it says RF-XXX. Is that normal or did I get fucked?

Does someone have a pic of that area of the hot rod cams I can compare?

Someone on another forum said Ford Racing claims RF-XXX is production cams.

they are 750 new why didn't you just spend the extra 150 for new ones?

Hope they are legit, 600$ for used cams is steep. Not sure on the part numbers.

Why not? $150 is $150. That would pay for most of the spring compressor if anything.

im just not a fan of buying USED valvetrain...you dont know if they installed them correctly...and especially if it was only 150 dollar difference between new and used...but thats just me i hope they work for you man

I understand as I was wondering if it was ok to buy used cams and figured what the hell.

I can write down both sets of numbers when I get home later. There's the RF-XXX numbers/letters then one lobe below is another set of numbers.

+1 I'd rather pay full retail for a new product of this nature from a reputable dealer than to risk it at such a small savings for a used 3rd party piece. I've been screwed over a few times in the past. Thats also why i hate ebay and refuse to buy from there.

Get hold of a mic and mic out the lobes. If they are 13mm chances are you're OK provided they are straight ect. Stock cams are 12mm {lift}

I thought about maybe doing that as well.

I contacted sutton hp and they went and got a set off their stock, looked and told me that the XE-XXX numbers on the box MATCHED what was stamped on the cam. So it looks like I got screwed or the seller made a mistake and boxed the wrong ones (I hope!).

It's clear to me now I should have just bought the damn things new. But at the time it seemed like a good idea.

So I looked up the specs and stock is actually 11mm and Hot Rods are 12mm. But doesn't matter b/c checking those is a good idea and we all know Hot Rods are 1mm higher.

Another idea is to measure the LSA. I just did that actually with a protractor. I put the cam on a paper, put two marks where the top of the intake and exhaust lobe is and measured. Now, the Hot Rods should be 110 degrees. I measured 133 degrees. Even if my redneck method was off, I still would have been WAY far away from 110 degrees. I can tell by looking at the cam lobes that they are pretty far apart and do not have the tight LSA that you should have for the kind of lope Hot Rods give.

So I have very large LSA readings and non-matching part numbers between the box and what's on the cams.

Damn.

My bad, you are correct they go from 11mm to 12mm. Don't know what I was thinking. Probably goes back to when I going to have a custom grind.

The part number on the box is different than the number on the cams. You likely have the right cams.

FWIW, i bought a set of used Hotrods(7k miles) and paid $400, everything worked out great, been running them for 5 months now.

Over Head cams have less potentail to be damaged so second hand is not as risky. I had a Pro shop check them out and install them, they pulled them out of the car i was getting them from so there was some sort of comfort level with installing a 2nd hand cam.

Its not about wether they are bent broke or damaged. It's about whether they are FRPP or STOCK. The XE=FRPP and RF=STOCK... He got scammed just like me...

Yep. FRPP confirmed this and Sutton HP looked in at a set in their stock and confirmed that the XE number should be on the cams. Plus I measured the LSA which is WAY off of what the Hot Rods should be. I can tell now just by looking at it (something I didn't think of doing when they came in since I trusted these were the real deal).

So today I filed a case with ebay since I never heard back from the guy.

30 min after my case opened, I got a reply from him. He offered a PARTIAL refund of $400, I can keep the cams, and he was "sorry" (yeah right) for the inconvenience. I replied back saying absolutely not. I'm not paying $200 for stock cams either. I want a full refund or I will take legal action, period.

A little while later, I got an ebay email saying the seller has requested ebay customer service to handle it and make their final decision. It's obvious to me now that my hopes were false and he did this scam on purpose. Otherwise, he would have 1) sent the proper cams or 2) gave me a full refund. Asking if I would accept a partial refund is not only un-acceptable but insulting. Plus it shows he had this scam planned all along.

I have his name and address. I also looked for him on good maps and saw his house in the sat view which looked like what I saw in his facebook profile pic of him in front of his house next to his red mustang and red motorcycle.

I bet he never sold that car and that was a lie too. He's not getting away with this.

Since I know he does not have the cams to send me, I'm going to probably today order the REAL THING from somewhere. Probably sutton hp since they have the best price ATM and they are the ones that confirmed to me that the XE number should be on the cams since they went and looked at a set in their stock. They were very helpful and fast to respond and did things I never asked (opening up cams and looking) so I think it's only right to order from them (it helps they are also the cheapest! ).

His ebay name and youtube name is camthumpinstang. He's selling more stuff on ebay now which is probably a scam too. It's too bad I didn't wait to leave feedback until I found this out. So now I gave him positive feedback for being a scammer. This sucks. I hope ebay can help me somehow. They should be getting back to me within 48 hours according to the ebay message.

Sweet man, hope it works out for you. That's funny, he said he would give you $400!!! What a bigger loser for even saying that! You know you could take his $400 from him and buy my cams for $400 then I won't be out anything and you will have 4 cams. Let me know, I can get them out to you ASAP. haha
