What purpose does the "Cam Phaser Parking Spring" Serve?!?!

Okay, so as some know I am having an issue with the car. Well everyone keeps talking about possible timing issue and the tuner things it may be with the valvetrain.

My questions is this... What purpose does the "Cam Phaser Parking Spring serve?

The reason I ask is that when I took my phasers apart to put on the phase limiters, I only had 2 of the 3 parts. I had the small rod and the spring. I was missing the piece in the picture with the 3 sides. Both phasers didn't have them and I think I have one of the very first designs. So I am wondering if this could be playing a part in my problems???

Any ideas?

When you shut it off the phasers lock with this spring loaded pin at 0 degrees.

Not sure how many times the phasers have been redesigned but on gregs 2010 the spring that returns the phaser to 0 is on the ouside of the phaser. Kinda shitty as tony said if it slips off the retention clip or breaks loose its going to go into the engine somewhere.

No, they weren't present in either phaser. I noticed it when I did the phase limiters... And even another member asked about it during my build. So when I did the other side I paid certain attention to look for it and again it was absent.

Mines a late 05 and mine has them . FWIW

So going with this, that means that it should only really be needed for start up since that is really when the timing should be so low correct? Any other time it should be pretty much invisible to the rest of the valve train...

Ideally yes, it gets released by oil pressure but I do not know the strategy behind it at deep.

PCM reduce oil flow through the vct solenoid,
bringing the cam angle back to zero until
the higher rpms...

Sorry for my ignorance, I am by far not an expert here? What are you getting at so I may understand futher...

sure....well we're talking about times when
the cams are at a zero retard angle. i'm just
pointing out that it's not just at startup, but
also when you floor it and go WOT.

the pcm holds the cams at zero degrees (WOT) until
about 4750 rpms, then it gradually starts
to retard them.

So in theory, if it needs to lock it at 0 and can't cause it's missing a piece then it may cause a problem? And since I am having the problem at WOT and flooring it and even before I hit 4700rpms (haven't been over 4500rpm during my problems) it could also likely be an issue?

all this information is helpful so thanks, my tuner will be coming to my house tomorrow to check things out also, so the more I know the more I can tell him.

i'm not sure if the phaser spring is causing
your particular rough running issue, but it
does seem that if the PCM is not able to hold
the cams in stable positions, maybe it is part
of the problem.

I do know one thing.... If you have to buy new phasers to get that part they are NOT cheap! But I may be able to help you out with those pieces if you have to have some I will just have to dig around in the garage. I will keep following the thread and see what your tuner/builder says also, otherwise let me know.

I'm sure that somewhere might be someone with a broken phaser that has those pins. Expending that kind of money on new phasers just for the pins is way too much.

They are way to expensive and thats why I will help him out if he needs it like posted up above.
